Much of my sonic idea of a "new soundscape" has been significantly influenced by our move to a more countrified location in Upstate New York, where we are constantly hearing birds, tree frogs, crickets and other insects, a sound environment made possible by our new closeness to nature.

Where to begin?  Back in the mid 1980's I was part of a performance group that created 'audio events' with musical instruments and found objects in six hour intervals over the course of three years while I was in college.  There were five of us altogether for the most part (with a few deviations along the way) as the core of the ensemble, and these performances were as much of an endurance test for us the players as for the rotating audiences who would pass through the open space over the course of those frenzied hours.

Guitars, synthesizer and sampler, microphones, found objects and anything that wasn't nailed down could become a percussion instrument during a performance.  Performers would rotate between instruments or taking turns telling stories.  Nobody involved had any official music studies or training; for the most part, non-musicians using instruments as tools to create sonic environments and oddball audio situations in opposition to one another.

Thanks to a nearby Nagra tape machine, we recorded everything during this period and now -- some 35 years later -- I have been revisiting these archived materials and have begun editing them down for the sake of creating a slightly more coherent listening experience.  The first of these shows, The Skinless Man, is thus represented here in a 3 hour and 45 minute cutdown that captures the raw energy and excitement of the performance while losing some of the excesses that arise from mind numbing exhaustion, questionable experimentation and repetition that can occur over the course of so many non-stop hours of playing.

This is obviously not for all ears and temperaments, but if you choose to give it a listen, please approach it with an open mind -- and watch out for your ears as it can sometimes get pretty loud and unruly!
