BIO: Retro, 70s styles Blues Hard Rock riffage from Lexington, Kentucky. BLACK CAT BONE is fronted by David Angstrom and was forged as a power trio during the late eighties seeing Angstrom working alongside Mark Hendricks on bass and Jon McGee on drums. Prior to adopting the title BLACK CAT BONE the group had operated as SKINNY BONES, this unit going through a succession of bass guitarists in Tom Baker, David Barrick, and Mark Fitzpatrick. Building up a local groundswell of support the band signed to the Chameleon label, issuing the 'Truth' album in 1992.

Helping clean up some stuff at my mom’s house I found a whole bunch of old CDs, including this recording from 2006 of my old band, The Silent Screen. It is from a rehearsal and served as a kind of demo for some songs that ended up never being “officially” recorded before the band split up. 

While there are some things I would do differently now, this recording captures that moment in time perfectly. The songs are good. The band is tight. It’s not quite a finished project but it’s well on its way. This was the only original band that I sang in where I did not write all of the songs. Scot Kaeff, the bass player and co-lead singer, wrote probably about half of the lyrics, and the three of us, David Chapman was the drummer, wrote the music together. 

The band was entirely too short-lived and never realized its full potential, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted. If only that guitar player would chill out a little and let the songs breathe some…

While I was cleaning out some stuff at my parents’ house last year I found a bunch of old music that I have recorded over the years that I had thought was lost to time. Some of it was demos by The Silent Screen for a project that was never completed or released before the band broke up. I posted some of those songs to Soundcloud, which led to some conversations and ultimately for the band to reunite after almost 20 years. 

But the demos were not the only things by The Silent Screen that I found. I also found the original AW4416 backups to some of the songs from our lone “official” release from 2006, “A Wrong Made Right.”

“Live Out Love” was the opening track to that album. I recently restored the backup of it on the AW4416 and then moved the files over to my computer to remix it. The first thing that I noticed was that a full 8 of the 16 tracks were guitars. I got rid of most of those and found a really tight performance buried underneath the cacophony of guitar overdubs. Interestingly I also found a guitar part on the verses that didn’t make it into the original mix that I really liked, so I added it to this mix. 

What I think is especially cool is that, while working up a new version of this song for both our setlist and to record, I thought I wrote a completely new part. That “new” part, however, is pretty much just this old one we didn’t use, just without the wah and vibrato. It must have been rattling around in my head all these years waiting for an opportunity to come out. 

This remix is much closer to the live version of this song than the original mix was, and I think it captures the tightness and energy of this band perfectly. I am looking forward to us finishing the new version as well, but I’m glad to have found this and been able to do the remix. We are not this band anymore. In some ways we’re a lot better, and far more musical. We’ve all had a lot of years to hone our craft, after all. But those three young guys a couple of decades ago could really bring it in a way that we old guys just don’t have the energy to. 

Now, about those high notes I sang at the end… Never again, y’all. Never again.

While cleaning out some stuff at my parents house I found a trove of old music that I have recorded over the years. Part of that was the AW4416 backups to songs from The Silent Screen’s 2006 EP, “A Wrong Made Right.” I was only planning to remix and remaster this material, but after posting some other songs of ours that I found, The Silent Screen decided to reunite after almost two decades. 

“Scream” is one of my favorite early songs of ours. It perfectly captures our particular brand of weird yet accessible rock. This performance from 2006 is a good one, very tight and with a lot of energy. It also was tracked almost completely live, with the only overdubs being vocals, so I didn’t have to sift through countless guitar tracks remixing this like I did on “Live Out Love.”

What’s interesting to me, revisiting this original recording, is how differently I play and sing this song now. I have grown to like the new version more, but this really works for what it is and captures who I was 19 years ago very well. Scot’s bass lines and Chappy’s drums always blow me away when I listen to this old stuff, but they also blow me away in rehearsals now. Playing with great musicians helps you become a better one, and I am fortunate to have been able to play with them way back when, and even more fortunate to be able to do so again all these years later. 

I do think we are a better band now, but those young guys could play a little, too.

It's Not What You Think

One Subtle Change - Demo

My name is Scot Kaeff and I'm a bassist, songwriter, lyricist, guitarist, poet (with five published collections at present), safety professional, social critic, voice actor, actor, and aspiring novelist. When playing music recently, though, I've been working under the name Reasons For Moving.  I'm also a former member of Dr. Kevin Holm-Hudson & The Adjuncts, where I played bass and still contribute from time to time.

Reasons For Moving Biography:  Reasons For Moving began as an acoustic duo in 2009 and, through the course of one CD release, Consumption Of The Fittest, and a variety of talented musicians passing through its ranks, has taken form again in 2017 with original member, Scot Kaeff, at the helm. 

Scot began playing bass and writing songs at the tender age of 14, cutting his teeth mainly on heavy metal.  His influences range across a wide expanse of music, but some key elements include Iron Maiden, U2, Manic Street Preachers, Peter Gabriel, Our Lady Peace, Queen, David Bowie, King's X, Genesis, Heather Nova, Kaiser Chiefs, Wolf Alice, The Tragically Hip, The Joy Formidable, Savatage, and Midnight Oil.  Always in original bands, seldom was a cover played, which made gigs somewhat infrequent, but honed the writing to a coruscated edge. Two members of the mid-nineties progressive metal band Scot led, Feelin' Crystal, Tim McNally and Jessica Palmer Banish, also did time in Reasons For Moving and remain active collaborators, along with keyboardist/pianist, Dave Crowe.

Reasons For Moving is a project, first and foremost, dedicated to intelligent, soulful lyrics (Scot has five poetry collections in print, the most recent being Rendering The Impossible, Finishing Line Press, 2014) and grooving, bass-driven rock & roll, sometimes acoustic and wistful, sometimes aggressive and brazen. Only demos are posted currently, but as 2018 continues, look for final products to be posted in their finished forms.

Reasons For Moving...as Mark Strand wrote in his poem, Keeping Things Whole, "We all have reasons for moving. I move to keep things whole." The music, the lyrics, the band are all an attempt to do just that.
