Known for their unique approach to reggae, Glasgow’s Mungo’s Hi Fi have always been influenced by wider soundsystem and dance music culture. They’ve distilled this passion into new single Back In The Dayz, a homage to 90s rave, jungle and breakbeat, featuring Bristolian emcee Gardna and sultry London singer Catching Cairo.
Over a jungle-esque break and a bassline sounding like a vibrating warehouse roof, Gardna and Catching Cairo share evocative memories of raves and dances they’ve enjoyed. The sounds, friendships, fashions and refreshments that connect the communal party experience flash by in a heady cocktail hit of nostalgia and optimism. The lyrics were co-written by London reggae singer, and Mungo’s collaborator, Kiko Bun.  
Like all Mungo’s productions, Back In The Dayz is simultaneously looking back and facing forward. It’s a love letter to the rich traditions of UK rave culture, but also a glimpse towards the time when we can all be free to party again.

Following the success of their pandemic themed Dub album, Antidote, Mungo’s HiFi issue two vocal cuts to one of the LP’s biggest rhythms, on their Dumbarton Rock imprint. 
The first is Good Lovin, a sweltering romantic chant by legendary Jamaican rub-a-dub deejay Lady Ann, backed with a deep and hypnotic dub.
On a fuller mix of the same backing, comes New York Boogie by Israel’s Ranking Levy, a journey through the Big Apple and its surrounds in an emotive Big Youth influenced style.
Both songs saw release on an older version of the rhythm, but have been updated with more modern production and a live band. 
Each captures the heady days of Jamaican dances in the early 80s, while sounding completely fresh.

After his silky-smooth vocal feature on Eva Lazarus’ Light As Feather, it was inevitable that Mungo’s HiFi would pursue a project with London-based pure sing-jay Kiko Bun. 
Ms. Burnett is an ode to a lady friend of distinction, atop a dreamy major key rhythm whose bass-heavy clarity could have come out of Jamaica’s Channel One studio in its glory days.

Charlie P is best known for his reggae and dancehall releases, so this grimey countdown of his rules of the dance comes as a surprise. The vocal is superbly matched with productions that span the worlds of soundsystem including two of the most exciting producers around. Mungo’s Hi Fi start their side with a digital riddim that creeps into more progressive sounds. Kahn’s production is darker with almost eastern atmospherics and is heavyweight as you would imagine.

‘In the belly of the beast man a soldier’ are MC Ishu’s lyrics that gave this ska inspired riddim track its name. It is now 10 years since Scotch Bonnet’s first ever release that featured Mungo’s Hi Fi’s Belly Ska riddim. It proved to be a massive hit with music lovers with countless artists recorded their own vocals and dubplates over it - Luciano uses it as the closing track for his shows. We have resisted countless calls for a repress until now. This release features two new 7 inches, one with Marina P’s ‘Divorce a l’italienne’ and Ranking Joe’s ‘I love Jah’ which were originally out on 10”, plus previously unreleased ‘Gideon boot’ by General Levy featuring an instrumental with boosted sub on the b-side. 

This is a limited issue repress brought out to celebrate Record Store Day 2015, as well as the 10th anniversary of Scotch Bonnet Records.

Rising French producer and Scotch Bonnet family member Stalawa skips back to the digital 80s for an old-meets-new track creation to get you jumping. Stalawa has taken the original vocal to 1989’s Rough Winer by high-voiced deejay Lloyd D Stiff (on the Digital English imprint) and built a different riddim in a sprightly major-key style. This production has even been mastered in Mungo's studio on a Sansui WS-X1 multi-track cassette recorder to give a genuine 80's lo-fi sound. From its visceral drumrolls to Lloyd D’s PG rated slack lyrics in praise of athletic dancing, this is a true modern classic.

Jump in the line - rock your body in time - this calypso classic was originally written by Lord Kitchener in the 1940s and later covered by Lord Invader, Lord Flea and Harry Belafonte. It has remained a favourite for a full 80 years, appearing in films such as Beetlejuice where Winona Rider wines out to it. This version comes out of it being an old time classic show stopper for Mungo’s Hi Fi from around 15 years ago, so much so that they rebuilt the track in their own style with a rare Mikey Murka carnival cut on the B side.

Following the success of their last 12 inch release, Up Deh with Mark Iration, the duo have laid down two heavy duty slabs of pure sound system mayhem.
Mercy features the unmistakable voice and flammable lyrics of ferocious rockstone deejay Capleton. Thunderclap gives a similarly hard stepping backdrop to the younger brother of Supercat, Junior Cat, who carries the hypnotic family style.
