One of the best-loved Ibiza anthems and club cuts of all time Café Del Mar gets brand new remixes from the original trance master Paul Van Dyk. It’s such a perfect fit that it begs the question: why has it taken nearly three decades to happen? 

Nearly 30 years ago, Paul M aka Kid Paul, recording as Energy 52, unleashed a record onto an unsuspecting public that would go on to define club culture for an entire generation of dance music enthusiasts. Named as an homage to the legendary Ibiza sunset spot, Café Del Mar broke down boundaries between the underground and the mainstream, charting in the UK singles charts on three separate occasions and named as the “best tune ever” by Mixmag at the start of the new millennium. In terms of cultural and emotional impact in dance music, it’s hard to find a record that comes close. 

Café Del Mar has come to represent the most euphoric and hedonistic pleasures of dancefloors - in Ibiza and all around the world - and has been remixed by some of the biggest names in the industry. One name that’s been strangely absent though is that of Paul Van Dyk: a trance icon and a seemingly perfect fit for remixing a record of this stature. 

Paul Schmitz-Moormann (aka Kid Paul) and Paul van Dyk were close DJ buddies in the early Berlin Techno scene, and played around a hundred DJ gigs together, all around Germany and Europe, before they moved on in different directions. Now nearly 30 years later he’s finally got the chance to remix this iconic record. 

For the new release, Paul Van Dyk delivers two scintillating remixes. The XOXO remix slows the tempo slightly and employs crisp percussion and deep, pulsing bass while still maintaining the out- and out exhilaration of that epic breakdown, while for the trance purists the Shine remix delivers the atmosphere of the late 90s alongside the sharp production aesthetics of the modern day. 

Paul Van Dyk’s Café Del Mar remixes mark the first new release on the label Superstition Records after an almost 20 years hiatus. From 1993 until 2003 Superstition Records was a groundbreaking Techno, Tech-House and Trance Label and released some of the biggest and most revered records of the early German electronic scene.

Technoclub Retro presents the most anticipated cover of the beloved Somewhere over the Rainbow, originally performed by Judy Garland on the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The track has special meaning for the electronic dance community, thanks to its connotations of tolerance, acceptance, unity and peaceful leaving. It has been covered by many EDM artists including Marusha and Cosmic Gate. Fast forward in Spring 2024 and Talla 2XLC teams up once again with the Australian singer Clara Yates to recreate  Somewhere over The Rainbow as true uplifting euphoric hands in the air vocal trance anthem. There is also a very personal reason, behind Talla's decision to produce this remake. His daughter love the authentic song a lot, and Talla offers his uplifting trance version, as a special gift for her. Energetic thumping driving basslines, razor sharp psy touched kicks, pounding drums and euphoric synths to excite the listeners and encourage them to blow their whistles and singalong. The breakdown is very effective with the infectious vocal radiating positivity and optimism along with theatrical orchestral strings, airy pads and massive colorful synths to penetrate your mind, body and soul. The climax is full on and euphoric as you can expect from Talla 2XLC excellent production values. Clara Yates once again shines with her outstanding performance with honesty, innocence and sensitivity in her very emotional memorable distinctive voice. After the exceptional Stay, Shadow Left Behind and Back To Life fans are served with another fantastic collaboration between Talla 2XLC and Clara Yates that seems to combine their artistic resources perfectly! Somewhere Over The Rainbow will bring spring in your DJ sets and is out now on Technoclub Retro.

John Lennon - Imagine!! Just saying the artist and track name makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. It started out as merely an idea of bringing a timeless, iconic track with global recognition and unique message to a Trance audience. Charlie and I worked tirelessly for a solid 3 weeks in preparation for Gatecrasher's 20th Birthday celebrations. It was initially meant to be a surprise, one-off track and understandably, we had concerns about how it would be received.

Needless to say, we shouldn't have been. By the time my set had finished, I was inundated with questions about this unknown Trance remix of John Lennon - Imagine.

Armin was due to play Creamfields in 2014 and I had only ever played the tune again as an encore track in Liverpool which had generated even further interest. I figured that with the prolific Beatles connection (Cream being a Liverpool based club brand), he might possibly consider supporting. We sent it to him on the Friday of the event and knew that it was late in the day but a good tune is a good tune!! 🙂

The track was one of the highlights of his set and from
that point on, it was featured throughout his Armin Only Intense tours for a solid 2 years from Ultra Miami to ASOT Sydney to Electric Zoo in NYC!! The rest as we can all say is history!
