One of my best friends in the whole world's son Alec's birthday party was just hours away and what the hell do you get for a 2 year old? I decided to quickly write him a song based on his habit of pointing at things like lights and TVs and saying "It's on!" and record it onto a CD.  Now that he's turning 8, I think he finally gets it. Secondly, I don't know what happened. One minute we were having a perfectly normal first date. The next, she had started a fight with 6 girls in the bathroom line and was being put in cuffs. The next day, I made a comment on my sister's Facebook post about my Tinder date getting arrested and my step dad Ron read it which lead to an amazing voicemail from my mom.

Rather than call back and explain the story, I remixed it into a song and sent it back to her. Enjoy.

Today would be my dad's 70th birthday. I can't imagine him any older than the day he left us at the age of 49. I can tell you he would be bummed that as of today he could no longer say he was "69". 

He passed away the end of my junior year of college at WVU. For my senior recital I gathered my band members Chris Russell Brent Bunner and Matthew Warder for a one time performance in front of maybe 100 people in a black box theatre of a song I wrote right after he passed away. Luckily, it was recorded and I just cleaned it up a bit and I'm posting here for the first time.

20 year old me was trying to make sense of the unfathomable. I saw a headline the week that my dad died that read "Local Weatherman Dead at 49" and it triggered this song.

This little snapshot in time shows me how far I've come in the 20 years since he's passed away. I didn't understand much more back then than I do now. I no longer believe in "up there", I'm not looking "someone to blame" but the one thing I got right was that he would always be frozen at 49. (The one thing I got wrong in this song is the "holy crap that is some jazz-y music school shit" bridge.)

Every day. Every hour. Every second I think of him. Today, a little extra. Happy 70th, Dad.

When I was 15 I "went with" Tiffany for 11 months. I liked her so much that I wrote this song about what it would be like if we broke up and, with the help of my guitar-shreddin' friend Ken, recorded this song into the Tascam 4-track cassette recorder and gave it to her. We broke up months later, fulfilling my own musical prophecy. Enjoy.

"Cold Out There Alone" (A song for Throwback Thursday)

10 years ago or more, when I was teaching piano lessons in West Virginia, I had an amazing 9 year old student named Kim. He was so smart he freaked me out. He wore a Student of the Week sticker all the time that was months old, he told me the space notes on a music staff FACE stood for "Finding Acronyms Challenges Everybody" and he would run out of his lessons screaming so the next kid thought I was mean.

I wrote this song for him which is based 50/50 on fact and when I performed it for him he turned bright red with embarrassment then came back the next week with a song about me and how crappy my car was.

Kim moved to Michigan soon after starting lessons with me and I lost touch. Until today on Facebook. Kim is now a junior at Michigan State studying jazz piano and doing another degree in the sciences doing cancer and stem cell research at the medical school.

Kim just told me today that this song had so much impact on him because he started writing songs by writing them about/for people. And now he records and tours performing his own music which you can check out here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kim-Vi/137922606234959?fref=ts

What a surreal and rewarding catch up conversation. I only had about 100 students over the years that I taught. I can only imagine how all of you teachers out there feel every day.
