I didn't understand it at the time. I fail to achieve any degree of understanding in the ensuing years, which are three in number. I presume Herb means that inherently you cannot be commercial and artistic. You cannot be commercial and quality. You cannot be commercial concurrent with have a preoccupation with the level of storytelling that you want to achieve. And this I have to reject. I don't think calling something commercial tags it with a kind of an odious suggestion that it stinks, that it's something raunchy to be ashamed of. I don't think if you say commercial means to be publicly acceptable, what's wrong with that?
As long as you are not ashamed of anything you write if you're a writer, as long as you're not ashamed of anything you perform if you're an actor, and I'm not ashamed of anything.
This is the area I know. But I think innate in what Herb says is the suggestion made by many people that you can't have public acceptance and still be artistic. And, as I said, I have to reject that.

One of the things that’s given The Bearded Man great delight over his incredibly long lifespan is witnessing firsthand how just about every human belief has, when given enough time, been proven to be false. He’s seen people burned at the stake, he’s seen arguments ending in wars and bloodbaths, all because people were sure they were right about something. The sun revolves around the earth… Leeches cure you of disease… I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter is better than real butter… Yep, the human track record is pretty damn bad. We’re basically wrong about everything, but we stubbornly cling to our viewpoints as if they were absolute fact. Mouthwash might actually make your breath worse, fluoride might make your teeth weaker, and just about every other preventative measure we have in places actually causes the thing it’s trying to prevent. As a result, The Bearded Man is pretty fluid in what he believes. He understands that many scientific revelations are more like the fad of the month than fact, and that surely all that will pass in a handful of years. When it comes to sound health, our hero believes in two things one, love has the power to transform. Two, a day by the ocean can cure just about any health problem one might have. Of course, he’s probably entirely wrong about both of those.

Every November, it’s a Thanksgiving tradition that The Bearded Man and his closest associates (like Y.V.E. 48) go on an annual camping trip to Big Sur. But this ain’t no ordinary camping trip. We’re talking deep fryers plugged into generators, we’re talking bonfires by the beach, we’re talking pigs slowly cooking on coals buried in sand — it’s absolutely mental. For this occasion, this elite group of the world’s most awesome citizens aren’t allowed to bring amplifiers of any kind. No boomboxes, no radios, no music playing apparatuses except one: the humble guitar. The Bearded Man believes if one of his records doesn’t sound good when strummed on the beach on a starry night with just a rough voice and a six-string, then it’s not really a record at all, is it? You can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick perverted individuals. At least, that’s the theory anyways. You see, bro culture is a funny and mysterious thing. The rules are straightforward, and yet they remain an enigma for those on the outside — it’s a foreign language that you either speak or you don’t, and if you don’t, well, quite frankly, you’ll never belong in some circles. This goes way beyond the popular film Animal House. If anything, bro culture has only expanded and grown tremendously since then. The Bearded Man thought he’d give bro life a try one weekend in search of a good time. All around him he saw what appeared to be male human beings, but these were no ordinary human beings… They were yelling, grunting, and generally making a LOT of noise, none of which was in English or any other discernible world tongue. They were clearly pumped up for SOMEthing, but what? He couldn’t say. Scoping out the situation from the safety of a pool chair, The Bearded Man asked some of the nearby girls if they fully understood the meaning of the term “bro out”. They said they didn’t, but they all agreed that everyone could recognize it when they saw it. Moments later, the president of the fraternity came over to The Bearded Man, and spotting someone who clearly didn’t belong, he asked: “Are you looking for someone here brah??” A handful of his cronies began to surround TBM. Things were looking pretty bad for our hero, when suddenly, he had a realization. “Wait a minute, who cares about bros? I came here for the ladies.” With that, he imitated Dr. Dre and said “F*** frats, you can have ‘em back!” And he dropped the mic and walked out with 6 of the finest females around.

The Bearded Man recalled an old Twilight Zone episode as he lay there on the carpeted floor of the airport lounge. He remembered how a man, having died, found himself in heaven. Every time he gambled, he won, getting richer and richer. Everyone loved him everywhere he went, and he couldn’t fail at anything he tried to do. For the first time, losing wasn’t an option. At first, he was thrilled. Wasn’t this what he had always wanted? He’d play another round of roulette, and wouldn’t you know it? 33 black once more. Another winner. After a few days, he found himself incredibly bored. Winning *all* the time was worse than losing *most* of the time. Suddenly, he began to piece it together. He’d never been the world’s most virtuous man, and this surely wasn’t heaven. This was one of the devil’s cruel tricks — a fitting punishment for a lifelong gambler. The Bearded Man pondered the moral of this story. He was between flights, having travelled from Perth, to Sydney, to Los Angeles, to Miami without a break. He’d been awake for 36 hours and he felt like a zombie. He thought about the 7 hour trip that remained from Miami to Lima, Peru, and he felt a rush of dread come over him. “This is what it means to be a globe trotter, I guess.” Recalling the story once more, he thought about all the truly wonderful people he had met on his travels so far. Would he swap the bitter of the journey for a life of only sweet? Not a chance in hell.

In 1997, the king of pop, the legend himself, the one and only Mr. Michael Jackson took the stage in Munich, Germany. After a heart-wrenching speech in which he profusely thanked the crew, his band, the people who made the show possible, and of course, his legions of adoring fans, he launched into one of his old-timey crowd-favorite songs. Truly, it was a tear-jerking experience for any real Jacksonian in the crowd. Despite not having some of the fancy, hi-tech light shows and 3D LED walls that we have today, no one can deny that this was one hell of a production. Tens of thousands of screaming fans were treated to the performance of a lifetime, and a moment that they’ll surely never forget. But between the extended speech and his modern rendition of The Jackson 5 classic “I Want You Back”, something else happened that not many people can recall… Sir Jackson broke his speech mid-sentence. There was a teeny tiny little bug on stage next to his feet. Not knowing what to do, Michael yelled a phrase that he’d shouted countless times since he was a small boy — “SECURITY!” He had a security guard come onto the stage to pick up the bug and remove it, making sure that it wouldn’t accidentally get stepped on and killed during one of the many moonwalks or spins that would follow. The security guard picked up the tiny bug, and escorted it off stage. That little bug was The Bearded Man. Michael Jackson saved his life that day, and for a few minutes, The Bearded Man got to stand on stage next to him in front of 100,000 fans. That’s just the kind of guy Michael was, and our hero thanks him for it!

A few days ago, user CtlynJnrIsStnnngNBrve asked what The Bearded Man’s lifelong dream was. What a tough question! We tracked him down, but we’re not sure you’ll like the answer. It seems The Bearded Man has been reading a lot of books recommended by legendary financial billionaire Warren Buffet. Rather than respond with something deep, poetic, or worldly as we’ve come to expect from The Bearded Man, our hero responded to this question by saying that his lifelong dream was to make the greatest use of compound interest he could, thereby maintaining his commitment to a sound and sensible investment policy consisting of education, hard work, and attention to detail. Not only that, he reaffirmed his support for the firm foundation theory, adding that picking winners in the stock market based on reasoning and sound judgment was his lifelong desire. You see, we found this answer somewhat perplexing. We’ve been studying the life of The Bearded Man for a long time now, and honestly, there’s nothing in his past that indicates that this was a dream of his before even a few days ago. So please don’t take this answer to heart, he’s obviously just caught up in another one of his phases. I guess, if there’s one thing to be said for The Bearded Man, it’s that he treats all his new adventures like a new love, diving into them as wholeheartedly as if he’d loved them his whole life.

Guess there was really no point to this story, was there?
