"Sax On The Beach" Mixtape Part 1 (Melodic Saxophone Deephouse 2013) (FREE DOWNLOAD)

Images du Futur, this year's Secretly Canadian-released sophomore album from Montreal's Suuns, receives fittingly edgy remix treatment from Canada's premier electronic label, Turbo Recordings. The nationalistic pride ends there, however, as the remixers are strictly European.

Leading the charge are Scottish techno prodigies Clouds, arguably the most important artists to emerge on the roster of Tiga's 15 year strong imprint since Duke Dumont and Gesaffelstein rose to stardom. Their remix is a brooding stomper that reflects the development of their sound in the concrete wonderland of the UK's underground scene. It's not bright or obvious, but, as with their recently released debut lp, it's a rewardingly profound listen for what is essentially a club-shaking DJ tool.

Fellow 'New Jack Techno' cohort joeFarr turns in two stellar versions built around massive distorted kick drums, already on the hype radar since Tiga kicked off his acclaimed Boiler Room set with the second of the two, a decidedly more clubby effort while the first mix chugs along at a slower tempo, leaving extra space for all the grit and grime of his heavily textured sounds.

Finally, French DJ-journeyman Ivan Smagghe weighs in with a pair as well… firstly converting 2020 into a style all his own, a kind of zombie cowboy march as It's A Fine Line (alongside Tim Paris)… and, even more finally, with a brilliant re-edit of an older track on Suuns's catalog, Up Past the Nursery. It's a deep, after-hours epic and surely the most accessible and pop moment on the EP, sure to fit in equally well into the sets of house DJs as well as late-night loft-party hipsters.

As has been well-documented elsewhere, I spent much of 2012-2014 doing DJ sets of other people's music (as opposed to strictly my own) for the first time since the 90s. I had so much fun hunting around on the internet, looking for the latest weird stuff to work into the set. I once heard a comedian describe their process, how they tried a new joke each night until eventually, they had a solid 75 minutes of their best material. That's how this set felt to me. 2013 was also the peak of EDM, and although I never fully embraced that movement, if you were a DJ, it was impossible not to be influenced by it on some levels. As a result, there's a few moments in the set that, years later, seem a little borderline in terms of an authentic personality fit..but I guess that's the dichotomy between immediacy and timelessness. @kane-west-official , the clubbiest thing to come out of the mega-trending PC Music crew, crosses over with this 4-tracker on the ever-unpredictable Turbo Recordings.

The solo project of Anglo-Japanese indie-pop act Kero Kero Bonito's Gus Lobban, Kane West was first discovered via a winning entry in a Tiga remix contest, where his raw MIDI-riffic sound caught Turbo A&R's attention. His palette is carefully constrained, with only a few vocal samples punctuating clever, hooky arrangements created on General MIDI sound modules.

Lead track "Mexicans" jumps out with a huge, groovy bassline, ridiculously catchy horn riff, funky percussion and vocal expletives like "OH YEAH" and "THIS DJ IS HAPPENIN". Over the top? Maybe. Fun? Definitely.

It’s an exciting sophomore effort from the young, London-based producer, whose references run the gamut from Maurice Fulton, Ceephax, Mr Oizo, Comeme, to classic Chicago house. Guaranteed fresh!
