Pale Flame

This song did not pour out of me. Most songs don’t. I came up with the title “Half of Everything” first which intrigued me. I wanted to take the idea of splitting things 50/50 in a divorce and illustrate the absurdity of it in a wacky way. After twenty-one pages and lots of umming and hmming I finally arrived at a lyric I was happy with. I typically write without the guitar and with melody in mind, so once the lyrics were finished, so was the song.

“When snow falls in hell you’ll come around you’ll put the bottle down.”

With one line you are introduced to the simple, elegant music of PEI singer & songwriter, Scott MacKay. MacKay’s country-ish songs are standouts, riddled with one-liners that sparkle like rhinestones on a Nudie suit.

Scott MacKay was raised in a house that straddles the line between city and country, with farmland in the back and a view of the city lights in front. If a place has any influence on an artist, then this may be where MacKay began to develop his attraction to contrast. Since the release of MacKay’s most recent offering “Twin” he has been dedicating much of his time on writing, and in doing so has found himself creating songs that are very much antithetical to what he has done in the past. Songs that do not evoke teardrops but rather smiles. Songs that make you think while wearing a grin.

Musically he has reached back into the era of Classic Country music and has borrowed stylings from the artists he admires such as Hank Williams, Walt Whitman, & Shel Silverstein.
