The Comet and the Three - Scouts the Vibes

The town had long forgotten the old brick building at the edge of the rail yard. Its windows were broken, its paint sun-bleached, and its hallways haunted by the whispers of decades-old echoes. But on nights when the moon was thin and the air felt charged, it became something else—a sanctuary for sound.

Tonight was one of those nights.
Three musicians, wandering souls with horns slung over their shoulders, arrived one by one like shadows returning to a familiar dream.

First came Jax, carrying his dented trumpet that still glowed like gold under even the faintest moonbeam. He pushed through the crooked door, sending dust swirling around him like a greeting.

Then Milo, tall and quiet, with a tenor sax strapped across his back. He nodded toward Jax, no words needed—just that mutual spark musicians share when the night calls them.

Last was Rhea, the heartbeat of their trio, cradling her gleaming brass trombone. She always arrived last, but her presence filled the space first. When she stepped inside, the abandoned building seemed to shift, as if waking up after years of silence.

They didn’t need a plan, or even a count-off.
They simply gathered in the open room beneath the shattered skylight where stars spilled in like confetti.

Jax lifted his trumpet. Milo let his sax breathe. Rhea slid her trombone into position.

Then they played. Bomp Bom Bomp - Into the night

Loud.
Free.
Wild.
As if the empty building were a cathedral and their horns were holy fire. The walls trembled, the dust danced, and their sound traveled up through the busted roof into the night sky.

It was in the middle of their improvised storm of melody that the stars shimmered.
Then one star broke loose.

A comet streaked across the heavens, blazing bright and silent, painting the sky in a trail of silver flame. Its glow poured through the skylight, bathing the trio in light as though the universe itself had stopped to listen.

Their music grew softer then, more tender—no longer a rebellion but a conversation with something ancient and celestial. The comet arced slowly, gracefully, and as it dipped toward the horizon, its brilliance pulled the edge of dawn behind it.

The first hints of morning spilled across the abandoned floorboards, washing away the night’s shadows. Their final notes drifted out into the cool dawn air, merging with birdsong and the distant hum of a waking world.

Jax lowered his trumpet. Milo exhaled. Rhea smiled.

They had met in darkness, played under starlight, and ushered in the morning with nothing but breath, brass, and the kind of magic only music could summon.

And as the sun rose, the three musicians walked out together, leaving only the quiet echo of horns and comet-light lingering in the lonely, forgotten building—
a secret the coming day would never quite understand.
