Hailing from South London, the producer and DJ has been a leading figure in electronic music since the early 2000s, who as part of the legendary DMZ crew and label, pioneered a genre rooted in sound system culture – a genre we know now as dubstep.

In 2006, Mala founded his label @deep-medi-musik as a platform for more experimental releases. It has remained a vital force in underground bass music, with a roster of artists including Kaiju, Silkie and Goth-Trad.

Twenty years since Mala first made his mark on the scene, his influence is as strong as ever. For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, the legendary producer and DJ created a mix featuring tracks from the DEEP MEDi vault, alongside some new releases. The mix is accompanied by an interview, as Mala discusses the duality of art and science in music-making, his ethos of “building” sounds, and the significance of an artist’s story in their work. Carhartt WIP Radio March 2025: Mala / DEEP MEDi MUSIK

Mattias Östling makes a welcome return to Love Love as Rolando Simmons for new LP 'Animatronics' after recent forays on Analogical Force and Furthur Electronix and nearly 8 years on from his Love Love debut 'World Building'. Hailing from rural Sweden, Östling creates understated but rich and dreamlike productions which have seen him become a familiar name beyond the braindance circles his music first found a home in, playing live at venues in the UK like Fold and Houghton Festival.  
  
As is characteristic of Rolando Simmons' work, a strong sense of narrative runs throughout this LP. 'Animatronics' stylistically plays across the gamut of Electronica, from the lush, playful braindance of 2nd track 'Purple Soap', to the upbeat syncopated rhythms within 'GlobalGroove Dust Club', and the slowly advancing icy ambient techno dirge of closer 'Memory Defrost'. The ephemeral ambient elements laced throughout allude to a sense of comfortable sedation but darker shades no doubt loom beneath. Measured in its operation and warm in its presentation, the album often steers into unknown spaces, moving through a range of tonal shifts, all the while feeling contained within a unified and detailed imaginary world.

"This little mix is a documentation of a magical summer in my house. I've had friends stay over during an intense long heatwave, and these tracks have been sketched out while hanging out drinking aperol spritzes and chilled wine, and after my friends have gone to sleep. It's a combination of sketches, short jams, almost finished tracks and repurposed bits. 
For those wondering who I am, I am a guy operating, quite comfortably, from the shadowy underbelly of the european experimental techno scene since the early 2000s. I was talked into releasing an EP on 030303 Records in 2014. Since then I've put out more stuff on Analogical Force, Love Love Recs, U.T.T.E.R., Furthur Electronix. 

I’ve gotten reports that both Autechre and Aphex Twin have DJ:ed my tracks, which is perhaps my biggest (second hand) achievement so far, since they are known for quite different styles of music.
