Manila (officially City of Manila in English, Tagalog: Lungsod ng Maynila) is the capital of the Republic of the Philippines.

Manila is located on the main island of Luzon in Manila Bay. It is one of 17 cities and municipalities that together comprise the 636-square-kilometer Metro Manila region. The city of Manila has a population of approximately 1.8 million, while the Metro Manila metropolitan area has a population of around 12.9 million (as of August 1, 2015). The entire metropolitan area is often referred to simply as Manila, which is administratively incorrect.

The capital is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country, as well as a transportation hub with universities, colleges, theaters, and museums. The city's patron saint is La Naval de Manila.
