In only a few months since its inception, recently formed Sydney label Scratches Records reveals a fresh lineup of MC’s, DJ’s, producers and crews, joining the stable alongside label manager and Sydney stalwart P.Smurf.

Paying homage to the classic Hip Hop cypher format, ’FOREVER’ is a posse track featuring representatives from each new signing. Including Melbourne bass trio HI TRAX and solo powerhouse FRESH VIOLET, Blue Mountains collectives OTHERSIDE, PLATTERPUSH & CODEKS, plus the up and coming Sydney heavy hitter SWIFTBOI. 

Produced by former Thundamentals member Silent Titan, FOREVER dishes out the warm vintage sounds of sample based boom bap, infused with a diverse, extremely versatile selection of the finest performers this country has to offer. The listener is bombarded with a barrage of smooth, punchy lyrics, relentless rhyme schemes and razor sharp cuts, enveloped in a soulful, bass-driven banger.

First Shot is the 3rd single from Platterpush and Codeks’ highly anticipated production album, Planet of the Misfits, dropping on Scratches Records on November 27th, 2020.

Musically the song pays homage to early 90’s Jamaican Ragga, with its trademark staggered rhythm and big synth bass line, combined with a real Hip Hop sensibility. The driving Dancehall rhythm features veteran UK emcee Lotek and Sydney’s own Ragga Army on vocal duties, who stylistically match the unique fusion of musical influences.

The title First Shot is a playful reference to the first smoke of the day and is the perfect soundtrack to light one up to this Summer!

Sydney Hip-Hop icon P.Smurf (formally Big Village Records) and Mark Alexander-Erber from international powerhouse Golden Robot Records, join forces to establish the independent Hip Hop label; Scratches Records.

Scratches Records was the name of P.Smurf's parent's record store situated on King Street, Newtown from 1982-1993. Selling second hand records and cassettes organically; their iconic store was also a social hub for the local community, especially musicians, and P.Smurf wants to continue that legacy. The story unfolds with the rebirth of the Scratches name, now their Son's Hip-Hop label, but it's not JUST a record label, just as their record store wasn't JUST a record store.

Joining this union we have the label's other founding member Sam Clouston (Scratches Visual art director, Street artist), a tight crew of artists and musicians, plus talented label mates offering a pool of creatives available for hire through the label. Videographers, photographers, graphic/digital artists, PR & social media, website design and we're only growing in numbers. A united, fresh new force in the face of Hip-Hop in 2019. Promises of exciting new ventures not only involving artist releases, but also creating a cross cultural pollination via workshops, tours, events, parties, and an apparel line are nigh.
