1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I produce, DJ and perform live with my band Daytoner and I've been making records for 10 years under this artist name, although I have been DJ'ing since the mid 90s and collecting records since I was a teenager. I live in the far west of the UK (in Cornwall) and spend a lot of my spare time either in my studio shed or out in the lovely Cornish countryside and coastline with my wife and kids.

2. 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format. 

It's been great to see the revival of 7" vinyl, which is a lot less back-breaking than a DJ bag of 80 12" vinyls! As a producer, the format also focusses the mind, condensing track length to less than 4 minutes, which is more than enough for most ideas anyway. The 7" also makes vinyl production affordable for DiY labels such as mine (Cabin Pressure Recordings) as they can be made relatively cheaply in short runs of 300-500 copies. 

3. One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I thought I'd supply a varied mix to include a lot of the genres that I enjoy, along with some of my major influences, so I've included a favourite from my youth (Primal Scream's 'Loaded' that I bought back in 1990 when I was at University) and a very dusty old Chess copy of Fontella Bass' 'Rescue Me', right through to brand new releases such as my own 'Apache Street' edit. I'm also very grateful to producer and label friends such as Smoove, Aldo Vanucci, The Allergies, 45 Live and Dinked Records for supplying me with their funk-fuelled 7s.

4. Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

In the last few years I've been focussing on producing and performing with my band and we've been out and about across the UK playing at over 50 festivals and events. This Summer we'll be playing at another 6 festivals including Mostly Jazz, Wilderness, Love Summer & Beautiful Days, plus we'll be supporting Craig Charles at his Funk and Soul Club events as we have been doing regularly since 2016. Online there's lots of my music in the usual places including Soundcloud, Mixcloud, YouTube and Spotify, not forgetting record stores such as Juno, Jazzman etc

5. Top 5 all time fave records

I always find these Top 5 lists really hard as it's always changing, but right now I'd have to go for...

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough (Tamla 1967)
One of the few records that always gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I hear it and it often seems to be an emotional moment when playing it out, especially when everyone sings the chorus in unison. I think its the Jamerson bass line that's the goosebumps trigger, but I just also love the whole Berry Gordy, Tamla Motown hit factory story in that tiny Detroit basement, during such upheaval in US society.

Googie Rene Combo - Smokey Joe's La La (Class 1966)
I remember buying Wah Wah 45's re-release of this for 99p from a little Cornish record shop (Solo Records) and I still treasure it as it's always been a go to record for almost any DJ set. I feel it distills all the excitement and optimism of the 60s into 3 minutes of jazz piano, breaks and crowd noise.

Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band - Apache (Pride 1973)
The importance of this record in the birth of hip-hop is well documented in the movie 'Sample This'. Personally I've always loved this break and as my 'Apache Street' 7" reveals I still use it today.

Primal Scream - Loaded (Creation 1990)
In my teens I was an indie rock fan, then this release became my introduction to the wide world of dance music and it still sounds fresh nearly 30 years on.

Daytoner - Little Wonder (Wack 2009) 
Indulgent I know, but it was my very first Daytoner vinyl release (and it's got a young Stevie on it)!
