Thank you to The Untz for inviting BABS (Bay Area Bass Scene) for a main stage takeover at the festival! BABS is a Facebook group I started in 2017 to find friends to go to bass shows with, that now has 1.8k members and is a fully thriving community and mutual aid network in the Bay Area. We've been attending The Untz religiously since 2017 (this was my 8th year attending, 4th year with CouchFam (I run that too), 2nd year playing music and 1st year on the main stage) so this was a crazy full circle moment for us. Shoutouts to my fellow BABS artists who played with me in the takeover: Aquafur, iibarra and Cozzee aka Tummy Gang, and BABS newlyweds Hot Topic Associates who threw down a b2b in the beginning of our takeover. From Tarndanya (Adelaide, South Australia), Bennie has spent the better part of the last 25 years digging deep into the sounds that move him - from jungle, dubstep and drum and bass to more soulful, downtempo selections. His mixes are often described as deep, hypnotic and warm - equally suited to heavy sound systems, late-night gatherings, or quiet moments of introspection.

His connection to music started early. After studying music at high school and playing in concert bands both here and in Japan during an exchange, Bennie stumbled upon jungle and drum and bass thanks to mixes his sister brought back from overseas. Back in the '90s, she also introduced him to the Cargo crew - a club known for blending jazz, funk, beats, and spoken word, all tied together by a love for good soul music.

Being part of the Rumble crew at Cargo - a monthly night that brought in fresh interstate and international drum and bass DJs - Bennie got to dive deeper into the scene. Time in Japan with the Delete crew expanded his musical horizons even further. When dubstep was just starting to take shape in 2001, he was there mixing sets and later worked alongside FTDF and Redline Dubstars from around 2007 to 2013, helping grow that movement.

Over 25 years of making music, Bennie's passion has stretched beyond just DJing - into production and visual arts - always pushing to explore new creative paths. Even through lockdown, he kept the music flowing, streaming with the Transmitting Live crew and pitching in at events whenever possible. Recently, he's been involved in collaborations at Ancient World alongside Wickid Lickwid and the Deeptank crew.

He's featured on radio also, making appearances on The Ones & Twos, Rollerz, The BassBin, and more.

This mix, made exclusively for Newy Bass Crew, is a snapshot from his wide-ranging collection - tracks that have stuck with him and that he's been drawn to over the years.

Really excited to get this mix out there! This night was truly like a movie! 

This mix was 100% off the cuff so there might be a couple wonky transitions but overall really stoked with how this one came out. Originally had 75 minutes, but got a 15 minute extension at the last minute. My crate started with about 150 track and I carved it down to ~75 tunes and played about 47 over the course of 90 minutes. 

Massive thanks to the folks at Soul'd Out and The Den for having me out and thanks to my pal Rob Noble for giving this recording a lil post master cleanup.

We've had a really busy start to the summer so we took a short siesta from the mix series, but we are back with a stellar spacey and fun jungle mix from our friend WHYS out in Los Angeles. Some of our PNW fam may have caught her set at Bass Coast in 2024 on Slay Bay. We are hyped to welcome her to the mix series with Sublimix 167!

WHYS, founder of DISLABEL, is an all star junglist and LA native that goes hard for the culture and on the dancefloor. With releases on Worst Behavior Recs, Ninja Tune, Yeska Beatz, and more, her catalog of music continues to grow. Impeccable taste and big blends characterize her high energy bass booming sets- referencing everything current about bass music and beyond while paying tribute to OG jungle/DNB sound every time.
