So many of us head back out into the world post-lockdown, with a different perspective on the overpowering nature of it.

Nothing Feels Like Everything, looks deeply at how the absence of something can be just as overwhelming, whether the absence of physical contact, the absence of love, the absence of empathy and respect.

This album uses gentleness beside power and cacophony to recreate the vast swings of emotion experienced in isolation. When nothing can be too much, while at the same time, all we want.

The sixth studio album from Scrimshire is an atmospheric and emotional experience. Moments of swirling orchestral energy perfectly countered by quiet, meditative calm.

With only four vocal contributions on this record, it is his most instrumental exploration to date, with moving string arrangements alongside delicate synthesiser soaked rhythms. And those few vocal contributions are captivating. From the opening explosion of UK jazz and soul legend Cleveland Watkiss, with a powerfully clear call on behalf of the marginalised and oppressed in society to the deeply intimate and supportive incantations of Ursula Rucker. No word is wasted here.

The record still carries on a tradition of collaboration on Scrimshire albums with contributions from Jessica Lauren, Idris Rahman (Soothsayers, Wildflower, Ill Considered), Nat Birchall, Huw Marc Bennett, Miryam Solomon, Emanative and recent Albert's Favourites signing Pie Eye Collective.

"Throughout lockdown I've been writing so much, and when I released Believers Vol. 1 back in November, I'd wanted to bring people something that captured the warmth and hopefulness I think we needed in spite of deep political and cultural turmoil. But there were obviously very low moments, socially and personally and I was capturing those too. This album holds more of those times of loss and being lost, of solitary contemplation and meditation, of yearning, of anxiety. More than I've experienced before, the collaborations came through long and beautiful phone conversations, developing friendships with new people, rekindling and supporting older relationships, taking time and giving each other time, care and space to create. Nothing Feels Like Everything

In October 2021, while Scrimshire began promoting his Nothing Feels Like Everything album, he also started a daily ritual of one-hour writing sessions. Each so-called “Exploration” was kept to a one-minute piece of music. The process and final pieces were shared each day across his Instagram and YouTube channels.

As summer 2022 ended Scrimshire revisited these explorations, recapturing the ideas and feelings and creating more expansive compositions.

The seasonal shift, in hindsight seems incredibly present in these sessions of woozy, cosy instrumentals, full of earthy textures and autumnal tones. So, in celebration of his favourite season, Scrimshire is delivering them to the world as an EP of Autumn-inspired music.

Music for Autumn Lovers follows the much loved 2021 album Nothing Feels Like Everything. In the wake of its release Scrimshire was featured alongside Inflo (SAULT, Cleo Sol, Little Simz) and Swindle in the Guardian as one of three significant soul producers in the UK right now. The album itself was nominated for Album of the Year at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards and received huge praise from DJs and publications around the world.

In the last few weeks of October 2022, Scrimshire wrote a new collection of songs with the descriptive working title "Scream". A direct response to the absurdity of the breakdown in the UK government, the horror of the treatment of refugees arriving on our shores and the callous disregard for the trauma being caused to low income people or anyone considered "other". While self-preserving Conservative MPs fought for their jobs, record profits were announced by energy companies as crippling amounts of money were gouged from people's pockets. The anger, sadness, mourning, and frustration was poured into these recordings.

Paroxysm

Pep Talks is an epic, electronic ballad that has been in the making for over 12 years. Scrimshire writing with frequent collaborator Dave Koor originally created the sounds and basis of this song back around the time of his 3rd album Bight in 2012. But the song coincided with a temporary break from the Scrimshire project and the original demo stayed quietly on a hard drive for years. 

In 2017 as he began the production of 4th album listeners, Adam decided to resurrect the song and invited another long-time collaborator, Stac to write the vocals for the piece. But as Listeners evolved, the song struggled to find its place on the album. Time and again, it resurfaced, for Believers Vol. 1, then as a completely reproduced piece for an unreleased album in 2024.

But now it sees light of day as a part of a forthcoming Forgotten Songs EP, Scrimshire's occasional compilation series of songs that slipped through the gaps. 

Cosmic, spacious, with stuttering beats reminding us of his earlier more electronic influenced productions, Pep Talks is a jewel of a track that we're so glad is finally out in the world.

His fourth album, musically, 'Listeners' draws from Scrimshire's passion for jazz, soul and electronic music of all styles; from an energetic combination of Afrobeat and garage on 'Won't Get Better', to the lushly orchestrated neo-soul of 'Thru You', and the harmonious jazz experimentations of 'I Never'. The album features a host of esteemed guest vocalists and musicians telling their own personal stories, including Georgia Anne Muldrow, Emma-Jean Thackray, Joshua Idehen, Madison McFerrin, Chip Wickham, and James Alexander Bright.

"With this album I wanted to get a more focused sound after six years of relearning and development in the studio. But I also struggled to find my own words, to speak about where I/we are now. So I allowed my collaborators total freedom to tell their own story and as they came back to me, they were telling the same stories I wanted to. It's resulted in some deeply personal confessional pieces: mourning family, collapsing relationships, extremes of self doubt and analysis, trying to balance public and inner persona, and a reminder that life in all forms is important.

It’s called 'Listeners' as I am a listener here, I feel like I've been given these very personal experiences to care for. Listeners because, the travesty of the last few years is that we stopped listening to each other, everyone is shouting at each other and no one is learning. And Listeners because I hope I've made something that is for other people more than I have before. I've tried to craft something warmer and more enjoyable, made for those who give me their time in listening to my music."

Since joining the Wah Wah 45s label in 2007, Scrimshire has released three albums of experimental cinematic jazz, and electronic sounds. Following his 2009 debut ‘Along Came The Devil One Night​’, his second album ‘The Hollow’ (2011) was a BBC 6 Music Album of the Week, with Gilles Peterson calling it “A late contender for album of the year”.

In the time since the release of his last album ‘Bight’ (“An eclectic range of influences ranging from disco to fusion to more contemporary electronic styles” XLR8R) in 2013, Adam has worked with long-time musical accomplice Dave Koor on new project Modified Man, and launched Albert’s Favourites releasing projects by The Expansions, Hector Plimmer and Jonny Drop. He has continued to gain radio and DJ support for his successful “Scrimshire Edits” series and has produced and mixed records for artist including Stac, Daudi Matsiko, Bastien Keb, Rōnin Arkestra, Jonny Drop. He has also continued to develop the Wah Wah 45s label, where he is now a co-owner and director.

Self-preserving conservative MPs fought for their jobs, record profits were announced by energy companies, while gouging crippling amounts of money from people's pockets, the sense of living in a dystopian fantasy was frequently overwhelming.

Originally named “Scream 8”, Unity Gain was one of the early outpourings from those sessions. Piano and drums bubble up until it fully boils over with huge stabbing synthesiser and string sounds in an outburst of frenetic energy. One of Scrimshire's most powerful deliveries to date.

Unity Gain follows, 2022s Music for Autumn Lovers and the much loved 2021 album Nothing Feels Like Everything.

‘Music For Autumn Lovers’ by Adam Scrimshire is an eight track album of lush, mostly acoustic based, minimal instrumentals eliciting a mixture of feelings for this special time of year.

Scrimshire explains, “Autumn resonates so strongly. There’s something very distinctive in this particular change of season, maybe it’s in how it holds so much “back-to-school” energy all the way through to the primal urge to hibernate and nest on the cusp of winter. For me there are so many distinct, unique sensations and latent memories, smells, visions that I can never quite pin down but hit me repeatedly throughout the autumn months in the UK.

The music in this album is an attempt to try and capture some of those things I struggle to express in words. The way the light changes as the sun comes lower. The way the air feels different as it cools after summer. The feeling of comfort despite the dying leaves and plants around us, making way for new growth.

When it comes to the beginning of autumn, I have a short list of albums I go to every year when the time feels just right. There’s a wistful sadness, a quiet energy, a warm resignation in their songs. I really hoped to make an album that could fill that space on the shelf for someone else. Something to come back to year after year.”

Four tracks originally released on an EP in 2022 are joined by new compositions ‘Hawthorn’, ‘Hazel’, ‘Willow’ and ‘Blackthorn’. Gently finger-picked acoustic guitars cosy up alongside pianos, synthesisers, strings and horns; filtered through an autumnal hue of susurrous production and effects. In turns comforting, melancholic and evolutionary; it feels like an album that can be kept being made and remade forever, like a season in itself.

I LOVE Margie, so very much. And only just stumbled upon this track from her self title Margie LP a couple of months back. Some lovely production but not quite what it takes for most dance floors and NOWHERE NEAR LONG ENOUGH.

As always I've tried to show maximum love for the original, just wanted to toughen up those beats and hear that insanely good chorus a few more times. I hope you enjoy!

Margie Joseph - The Same Love That Made Me Laugh (Scrimshire Edit)

After the full length release and tour of his much loved Music for Autumn Lovers album, Scrimshire quickly follows up with more seasonally inspired music. 

Frosted feels like a very natural companion to the autumn set, stripped down to the essentials and probably inspired by the exploration of his solo live show, the song builds slowly on an icy drone as brittle guitar unfolds alongside reverberated calls from distant synths. 

When the Rhodes, bass and finally, the beats created entirely from the sound of his guitar, enter it is like wrapping up by a warm fire to protect from the icy barrens of the opening minutes. 



I’ve been sat on this one a little while. Amanda and I have been in communication now since around 2021, after a few messages we met for the first time backstage at We Out Here. We started collaborating almost immediately, and yet none of that work has seen light of day. 

Initially she recorded pieces for what was supposed to be Believers Vol. 2, but as that project stalled heavily and I dropped it to make Paroxysm, much of the music got archived - including this piece, Red Weather. 

Red Weather is a meditation on increasing global temperatures, it sounds to me like a heat haze, like the shimmering air above baked earth. As the annual weather warnings increase, even 2 years after this song’s inception, it remains increasingly relevant. 

I hope you’ll enjoy this seven-minute meditation. It is not rushed, it is full of space and texture, languid Rhodes gives way to the breeze of Amanda’s harp which in turn metamorphs in and out of Moog synths, the melody intertwined. I love taking lead melodies like Amanda’s playing here and converting them to information I can run into my synths and it really works so beautifully here. 

The single is out on Wednesday and we hope to share more of our up-til-now hidden collaborations soon.

(I Know) I'm Losing You is the incredible track by Rare Earth that was sampled by Kanye for his equally amazing track Fade. 

I wanted to make a bit more use of the big sample in the original and bump the drums a little more too and in the end, deliver a bit more of that percussive groove towards the end.

Merry Clayton - Grandma's Hands (Scrimshire Edit)

Well on the 25th Anniversary of this classic album they re-released it and in there was a version with just bass and vocals of this wonderpiece. 

The bass of Bakithi Kumalo is INCREDIBLE and deserves more notice. Although I'm not sure a dancefloor can sustain their interest for 5-6 minutes of bass and no beats - so I'm providing you with this educational re-edit. Enjoy in your more Balearic moments.
