Since I was unable to travel to the US this weekend due to a spectacularly badly timed positive Covid test, I got on the decks in my bedroom and hit record. Nowhere near as fun as the shows I missed at Flash in DC, Good Room in NYC, and Smart Bar in Chicago, but if you were planning to hit any of those then stick this on for a taste of what I was gonna play. As the longtime gatekeeper for music distributor Word and Sound, Marc Schneider  has overseen virtually every worthwhile piece of vinyl to enter Germany. He continues to apply his tastemaker status and veteran knowledge in the DJ booth through regular invitations to Panorama Bar (Berlin), Fabric (London), Eleven (Tokyo), Rex Club (Paris), The Bunker (NYC), Bassiani (Tbilisi), Smart Bar (Chicago), Culture Box (Copenhagen), Watergate (Berlin), Electric Pickle (Miami). That’s not to mention his long-running affiliation with Hamburg’s PAL and the storied Golden Pudel club, as well as the infamous annual event Fusion Festival.
With his sporadic yet highly-valued releases and remixes for labels like Circus Company, Silver Network, New Kanada and Word and Sound’s in-house imprint Was Not Was, Marc has endeared himself to record-buying heads over a number of years. Similarly, it was little surprise for those in the know to learn that Marc had been secretly at the helm of the formerly anonymous cult label Story, the unassuming vinyl-only imprint of quality deep cuts that has boasted the likes of Anton Zap, Cottam and XDB on its roster since 2008.

As he'll happily tell you, Eddie Fowlkes has been DJing for 42 years. That's a long time for anyone, but especially for someone who never really stopped. From his early records on Juan Atkins' Metroplex record label through to newer releases on his own labels City Boy and Detroit Wax, he's been doing his thing and staying true to himself and his timeless combination of Detroit dance music genres. He doesn't always get his dues alongside his fellow Detroit techno pioneers in the Belleville Three, probably because his sound was always more hybrid, a blend of techno and house that he would come to call techno soul, including on his landmark 1993 album with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann, The Birth Of Technosoul.

But Fowlkes is still a force of nature, and a master at mixing too, having four decades to hone his craft. You'll hear that skill on his RA Podcast, which comes in the wake of two more prominent releases, for Rekids and Classic Music Company/Defected, that might help (re)introduce him to a wider audience. Touching on soul, jazz and funk, this is functional but deep stuff played by a master selector, whose hands you can always hear in the mixing—a personal, human touch that defines techno soul.

"There are a lot of my favorites of 2018 in there as well as a fair bit of classic records that I just can’t seem to get out of the bag. As usual I’m striving to pick records from the more melodic side of techno with the odd housey bits thrown in. I basically love all the records in the mix obviously, however if I had to pick a few records it would be the ASOK track, Bambounou, the incredible Barker track, Kenny’s Remix for Freq, which I recently re-discovered, that amazingly simple acid tune by Donato Dozzy and my favorite soul house record to date, Peven Everett’s 'How Bad I Want You'. I am honoured to be able to contribute a mix to this series especially as I have a long history playing in Melbourne, dating back to 2002 if I’m not mistaken. The great vibes of this city have certainly been in the back of my head when putting this mix together."
