‘You Gave Me Wings’ Recalls a Love Story and Friendship

New England, June 7, 2016 – Poet, lyricist, singer and multimedia artist Ingrid Chavez has today released a very personal musical tribute to her friend Prince Rogers Nelson on the day of his birth. In the new song ‘You Gave Me Wings,’ Chavez’s lyrics tell the tale of love and inspiration that began in 1987 when the two artists met and became immediately enchanted one cold December night in Minnesota.

They met in a nightclub after Ingrid sent him a note reading “Smile. I love it when you smile.” When Prince asked Ingrid her name, she said she was Gertrude, and Prince naturally had an immediate, equally whimsical reply; “I’m Dexter,” he said. From then on, that’s who they were to each other.

Out of dreams and whispering dandelions, their starry nights over three months that winter gave birth to a wintersong, and everything changed for the both of them. Ingrid became his muse and ultimately a diversion he much enjoyed from his plan to release ‘The Black Album.’ He shelved those plans and instead began writing songs that would comprise the album 'Lovesexy,' a very different album and one that would demonstrate his unwavering commitment to following his own art and heart. Ingrid became Prince’s ‘Spirit Child’ in life and in the film ‘Graffiti Bridge,’ as Aura, his angel.

But the graffiti bridge they painted together was definitely a two-way avenue and Prince’s impact on Chavez was likewise transformative. Her debut album entitled 'May 19, 1991,' was produced by Prince at Paisley Park Studio's, and he was the first to give her words life in song. They were two albums both of their dream time, coming together and mirroring one another in a divine rhyme with 'I Wish You Heaven' and 'Heaven Must Be Near.'

Collaborating with Danish musician Christian Rønn, AKA Ganga, a composer of electronic and rock music, Chavez offers a poetic homage to her friend, muse, Svengali. She thanks Prince for everything he gave her in a fond reminisce of their magical time together -- and with their fans who took the journey with them. ‘You gave me wings, and I gave you words and songs to sing...’

“It is impossible for me to fully recognize the enormous impact that Prince had on my life,” said Chavez. “Were it not for him, my career in music would certainly look very different. Indeed my life would look very different. My life pivoted when I met him, taking me to new places and introducing me to new people and collaborators. Prince shook my life to its very foundation, stirring a creative output I was not prepared for and gifting me with a lifelong confidence and drive to share my voice. He gave wings to many beautiful should who took flight with his encouragement. I am eternally grateful for his love and friendship. “It’s springtime in Heaven where your light will forever shine bright. but here on earth an angel left an indelible mark on us all.”
