My Entry for the #FullContactCompetition 

For this piece I used the usual set of instruments included the library for the competition (Which generally I used pitched down an octave) but I also created my own little sample library of percussion which includes: a clock, music box, egg timer, smashed glass, and a piano lid slam.

About the Instrument:

"In April (2021) I was lucky enough to have a 4.6 octave rosewood marimba in my home studio for two weeks. It was rented as part of a songwriting/composition grant project (thanks to The Canada Council for the Arts) and it got much use while in my space, including being sampled in detail as part of a future VI project.

After I had recorded more traditional samples of the marimba with two large diaphragm condenser microphones, up close, and a matched pair of stereo room mics (also condenser), I proceeded to strike each bar with my medium-hard mallets to find those that resonated the most. Once found, I sampled strikes of these bars performed in loose rolls, recording the Slow and Fast versions that you find here. These samples are particular and not tempo synched, so it may take some experimenting in order to fit them into your compositions.

During processing, some samples were pitch shifted, including some low fifths that are marked as B0 to B1 (and orange) on the keyboard, but sound an octave higher (B1/F#2 to B2/F#3). The Single Strikes articulation is intended as a sketching instrument and was created by editing single notes out of the existing samples.

A Childs Dream

A project available in the Unity Asset store where you can build your own Music track from a choice of 19 different instruments with an average of six different systems per interment each lasting 25s and easily loop able. Whats great about these systems is  anyone of them will work with each other so you can combine the Horns from system 4 with the Violins from System 5. This in essence give you the creator the power to arrange your own track and tailer it to what you want and need, producing something unique and complex, without needing any prior musical knowledge.

Its oh so quiet now, nothing but the odd car and a mask faced hurrying home, or a runner squeezing in his hour run.

"A gorgeous upright piano situated in the chapel corner of a Latter Day Saint meeting house. I grew up tinkering on this piano before church began on a Sunday. I would always play it with the felt dampening it to keep the noise down, I soon became addicted to its unique sound, having never played a felt piano before. Begrudgingly I left it behind when I moved to University, visiting it on the holidays until I discovered the world of sampling. Finally, I could take it with me without stealing the piano! After weeks, and months of work this was my baby, and I’ve been keeping it to myself for far too long. It’s not perfect, but that’s all part of the charm!"

The Story from the Creator of the Instrument:

"This is the sound of my Prophet 12 Module,
and this is my first ever attempt at a Kontakt instrument.

The project started roughly a week ago when Angus Roberts-Carey
posted the first official Pianobook Template.

With virtually no knowledge of Kontakt building,
I began using a combination of Angus’s template,
copy/paste and YouTube to see what I could come up with.
I didn’t want to get too deep for my first ever submission
but with a little assistance from Angus, I was able to cobble this together.

2 Instruments, Each with 3 patches that can
be played individually or in any combination using volume controls.
Each instrument includes replika tape delay with rate control knob
and a plate reverb."

The Story from the Creator of the Instrument:
"A number of years ago, my father-in-law, recently widowed, bought an apartment in Stockholm. In it was a Baumgardt upright piano, a fairly obscure Swedish make, but an incredibly rich and resonant instrument. While he was out I sampled the piano, just using a Zoom recorder to capture each key.

I was so glad that I recorded the piano because about a year later the flat was largely destroyed due to flood damage. Amazingly the piano seems to have survived, but I felt relieved I had a ‘backup’ of it just in case."

"Sampled using a Countryman Type 10 Active DI into a Chandler TG2 Mic Input, no processing.

A#2 is a bit of a dead tine but adds some character, or you could remap that key.

Roll with your own chorus, tremolo, reverb etc and enjoy!

This Rhodes was sold to me by a high school where I taught at long ago to raise funds for new keyboards. The late great keyboardist Kenny Kirkland attended this school and I was told he used this Rhodes extensively.

Here is the Story of Niue from the Creator himself:

Niue is a sample library with atmospheric, inspiring sounds, all based on wine glass recordings.

With several finger snipping techniques as well as rubbing with varying pressure, I made different sized wine glasses oscillate to find the sweet spot of the glass sound.

For the recording, I used two large diaphragm microphones. Afterwards I processed the recordings with complex effect chains and granular synthesis to create unique sounds that still have their glassy character.

Niue contains a total of 38 patches, including atmospheric, moving pads, LFOs and tonal percussive hits.
Of course, there are also clean patches that send you straight to Hogwarts.

Why “Niue”?

The initial working title for this library was “Glass Fields”. It already fit quite nicely, but a few weeks ago I read an article about the pacific island called Niue. Due to its minimal light pollution, you can see the most beautiful night sky on the island, which is why it offically becomes the world’s first “Dark Sky Nation”.

The name and the feeling around “Niue” perfectly deliver the concept of crystal clear glass sounds and atmospheric pads.

Niue works in Kontakt 5.8.1+. The filter is MIDI learned to the modwheel.

I love the slight imperfections that make it sound like I'm recording myself live at piano and not at my desk with a £60 MIDI keyboard.

'My family grand piano has gone slight out of tune throughout lockdown, which has created a wonderful warm texture. I wanted to capture the sense of being at home and so I hired a Neumann KU 100 binaural stereo microphone to whether binaural recordings make a difference. The results were mind-blowing. As well as the KU 100, I sampled the piano with a pair of Neumann 149s and you can choose between these signals depending on your needs. Using a cut-down version of the monolith sampling technique, the Family Grand is available in Kontakt, SFZ and DecentSampler format.'

Afternoon Practice

Samuel Davies began as a classically trained composer, his work notably used in the broadcast of Barcolana51 on BT Sport, and performed in a workshop by the Wind Quintet ensemble from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (2019). He specialises in music for both Film and Media and has been credited in many such student productions from Middlesex to the North of Wales. He is well studied in a wide variety of compositional styles, from Electrical acoustic to the classical style which bring a unique quality and flare to his music.
