SEALIONS DON'T BELIEVE IN FILLER.

"We end up being kind of tough on ourselves," frontman Joey Patino says. "If a song's not good enough, we'll scrap it. For this one, we ended up with five, but these five songs are strong."

These five songs are Number One Lover, a deliriously catchy EP of pop-perfect overtures and stick-to-the-ribs melodies that would make Morrissey grin with envy. A small batch of electro-guitar ravers recorded with Jason Kingsland (Band of Horses, Washed Out, Cults), the tracks came together over a number of sessions in Atlanta in 2013. "He's a great producer and a really good match for us," Patino says. "It took us working with him to figure out how to be a rock band. That's all we did growing up, and I think we forgot what it was like to be a young kid thrashing on a guitar."

The opening synth salvo of "Honey." The driving, propulsive beat—and thrilling, eventual riffstravaganza—of "Luster." The otherworldly majesty of "Thieves." The slow build dance party of "Diamonds." The heartbreaking tear-jerk of "Setting Suns." Taken as a whole, Number One Lover is an infectious titan that toys with convention and embraces an affinity for dance. No time for another beer. Not while this is playing.

This is the sound of a band at its creative zenith, except that the men who made it aren't yet content. Laurel-resting is for the weak, after all, and they've got more hooks to write. "Sealions is an exercise in how big and how impressive we could make our music," Patino says. "Every time we make a record, it has to be that much bigger. We're always trying to be louder, grander, more impactful. I think we pulled that off with Number One Lover."

SO ROMANTIC DESCRIPTION/ 

A little mix I cooked up to accompany our EP Number One Lover. It's mostly comprised of our favorite mid-tempo dance numbers and jams that I've been playing in sets since the inception of Sealions. You'll hear some acts that certainly shaped and influenced our sound as well some odd-ball stuff that I just think is rad, and if you care to read on I'll explain each song. Thanks and enjoy!

1/ House of Love - Love in a Car / So we obviously love shoegaze and all the early Creation Records stuff. House of Love is a particular favorite of mine. The guitar tones, man. Good stuff. 

2/ College - Depart / College and Valerie collective were the first folks I heard do 80's revival stuff in a really romantic not just nostalgic way. I remember hearing Teenage Color back in 2008 and thinking it was really special. That was also around the time we were conceptualizing Sealions and I'm sure it had an impact. 

3/ PNAU - Wild Strawberries / Another early influence on us back when the band was just me and Jason. We were looking to duos for inspiration particularly in the electronic/dance scene. I've been a fan of these guys and their projects since. When I first started DJ'ing I used to play this track ALL the time.

4/ Brian Ice - Talking to the Night / A really cool Euro 80's disco I stumbled upon a little while back. I don't know much about Brian Ice but I really like this track.

5/ CC Catch - 'Cause You Were Young / I love the drama in this song. It just sounds so melancholy and powerful. CC Catch is for sure worth checking out if you never have.

6/ Sugar Hill - Feeling for You / A new classic in my opinion. This was my favorite dance track released in 2013. The bass line is so hot and the Daft Punk-esque vocals are super catchy. Just so good.

7/ FX - Rum Pum Pum: K-Pop / I don't listen to a ton of the stuff but this track is as good as anything any of their English-speaking counter parts have ever come up with. The Spice Girls, Destiny Child, TLC, etc all would have killed for this song to be handed to them.

8/ Hercules and Love Affair - Blind / Another dance floor classic. Everyone knows this song but so what. It's still so good.

9/ Los Saicos - Ana / Peruvian proto-punk from the 60's. A girl asked me to play this once during one of my sets and I was pretty floored by it. It's really great how much I learn from people just by playing their requests. All DJ's should do it. Also if you are said person and you're reading this: thank you.

10/ Austra - Beat and the Pulse (Still Going Remix) / The build up in this remix is so great. I would have liked to put the whole thing on here. You should grab it from the internet and give it a listen if you've never heard it.

11/ Sealions - Diamonds (Trevor Dowdy Highschool Sweetheart Remix)/ Our buddy Trevor Dowdy did this remix for us and we love it. To me a good remix will give you something new to grab on to and I'd say this one does just that.

12/ Everything But The Girl - Missing / I have a not-so-secret love for early to mid 90's house pop music. This track to me is full of romance and the vocals are so full of longing even if you disregard the lyrics.

13/ Crystal Waters - 100% Pure Love / You might remember this one if you were around for its heyday. The drum pattern is so classic and great. All the 909 forever.

14/ New Order - All Day Long / Early-on people would always cite New Order as having influenced us and this is true. Who haven't they influenced? And so here's my favorite track off Brotherhood.

15/ Fleetwood Mac - Family Man / Mirage was for sure in our heads when we were recording Number One Lover. But then Fleetwood Mac is always a staple for us.

16/ Sealions - Setting Suns (VoS Balearic Mix) / Voice of Saturn aka Travis Thatcher hammered out this vibe-y sun soaked remix for us. Travis is a really talented dude and was a very early supporter of ours back when we would play shows together. We're super stoked to have him remix one of our tracks and he did a damn fine job. 

17/ Gardens and Villa - Star Fire Power / This is my favorite track from these guys. It's a great intersection between genres where it has lots of sensitivity and yet could be still be danceable. It just works.

18/ Telefon Tel Aviv - The Birds / I've always wanted to put this track on a mix and I've played it live a ton of times. I still can't believe how much this band has relatively flown under the radar considering how damn good it is. When I first heard this I remember thinking about how impressive it was. Like impressive the way a guitar player is when shredding or a piano virtuoso, but in this instance it's electronic. I'm still in awe of it.
