It’s not often you see a seasoned veteran of the scene release a debut solo EP a quarter of a century into their career as an artist, but in this case Aries’ was certainly worth the wait. Having released material on practically every Jungle label worth their salt, including Congo Natty, Dread, V Recordings, Run Tingz Recordings & Chopstick Dubplate - it is Bristol’s Ramajam Recordings that have finally thrown down the gauntlet on what is Birmingham’s finest’s most captivating project to date, ‘Year Of The Goat EP’.

The Chopstick co-owner has employed a solid sound across this project that really does embody the heart and soul of this music in 2015; 4 original tracks plus an instrumental that you expect to stand the test of time, in a ruthless scene where these days protracted shelf life is somewhat of a myth.

‘Year Of The Goat EP’ pays homage to a modern-purist-Jungle sound that is hard to come by in an age of sample pack jump up - this is really something Aries has done with great aplomb over the years.

'Dancehall Ruler' features the energy and vocal talents of Blackout JA, delivering a catchy number that Aries produced using only played in instruments, no samples whatsoever.

'Vicious' takes you back to a euphoric level with an addictive vocal, rugged drums and a driving bassline.

'I Need You' takes a similar stance, riding along the euphoric journey with up to date production techniques and dancefloor destroying vibe.

'Ways Of The Underground' takes you all the way back to the days of United States Of Drum and Bass, the mid 90's flow and toxic bass truly show his understanding of this music.

The EP also features a bonus track in the form of an instrumental version of 'Dancehall Ruler'.

ARIES - DANCEHALL RULER ft. BLACKOUT JA (clip)  [OUT NOW! - RAMA11]

Building on the strength of the already-massive original that has become something of an anthem in dances across the globe, we thought it high time to add a couple of remixes to the pot.

First up, Bristolian jungle dons Selecta J-Man and Kelvin 373 put their Born On Road stamp on it, rolling up the beats to a peak time fat one. Next up, Manchester's Think Tonk prang out and get psychedlic with a twisted bashment style version, tweaking the vocals into the sky. Finally another Bristol connection, the hotly tipped Rukus bring the bass weight to a minimal dancehall refix, mellowing the vibe a little while keeping the sonics lit.

Red Lions Performance From Inside The Pyramid, At The 2019 Harvest Festival In Burks Falls, Ontario, Canada.  Under The Feather With A Screaming Heart On Is An All Drum & Bass Mix Which Features Some Of Red Lions Favourite Tracks Over The Past Few Years, Sprinkled As Always With Some Jungle Classics.  Another After Midnight Set This Year Made This Mix A Little More Up Beat With An Emphasis On The Dancefloor.  Steady Drums Lead To Layers Of Vocals & Liquid Drops Followed As Always By Clouds Of Ragga Steam.  We Went From Under The Weather To Under The Feather In What Was A Heart Screaming Incredible Harvest Event.

Red Lion Presents - Under The Feather With A Screaming Heart On - Harvest Festival Set 2019

When I decided to start building this mix, I had one goal in mind: I wanted to tell a story. 

A story of love and heartbreak, of life and death, of self-discovery and loss, and the ways in which we communicate these experiences to each other and ourselves. Expressing our feelings, emotions, and thoughts can often be the most challenging and painful, yet beautiful and liberating moments we experience within the human condition. 

This is all born out of the philosophical concept of impermanence, which means that nothing in our realm of existence is permanent and that everything is in a perpetual state of change. Impermanence is the only permanent in life and if we can learn to accept that, we can ultimately find peace and happiness within ourselves. This is why I consistently try to incorporate it into my way of thinking each and every day.

I am also dedicating this mix to my mother whom suddenly passed away back in August. While she didn't necessarily understand Drum & Bass or its profound significance to me, she always encouraged me to pursue my passion for music throughout the entirety of my life. She herself was a melophile, a key characteristic of her own personality that was passed on to me and was one of the things that we bonded over most.

This is not intended to be a display of technical proficiency, nor to demonstrate how many tunes can be packed into an hour. This is simply storytelling through frequencies and I hope that I have managed to succeed at that in one way or another.
