Sean Carr is a Drummer, Musician, and Composer attending Berklee College of music in Boston.

Music to me is a way of communicating and expressing myself. It is possible to give someone a glimpse into my personality, just by playing something for them. It’s even possible to have a conversation with music. When I hear a bass line, I try to understand what the bassist is saying, and I try to complement it, and communicate back. This is what I like most about music, the ability to share and communicate. I say this because I often find it hard to communicate with people verbally, and music allows me to really open up to people and show them who I really am. 
Traditionally, music has always been about communicating. Every generation communicates with a different voice than the last generation. My grandparents’ generation communicated with jazz, my parents’ generation (which was a little rebellious) communicated with rock and roll, and my generation uses alternative, rap, hardcore, you name it. Musical changes are very similar to changes in speech throughout the generations. Changes in musical style are similar to the changes in lingo that happen from generation to generation. Personally, I like the older ways. I don’t think it’s that modern music has any less to communicate, I think it’s just how the music speaks to me. For example, if I were to listen to jazz, I think that jazz musicians say a lot within a small amount of time. There is so much going on that it’s hard to understand it the first time you listen. What the musician is saying may be simple, but he uses many describing words and adjectives, and paints a vivid image. I like the idea of having a lot to say about one thing. Imagine if the Mona Lisa had been painted with eight colors. It would still be the same portrait, but there would be so much less detail and less personality. When I play, I like to add in plenty of detail, but at the same time, I don’t want to over detail. I try to find a balance between over playing and over simplifying.
Of my musical aspirations, I would say my biggest one is being able to give my listeners something to really think about. When someone listens to me, I want them to think about why I played a certain way. It’s less important that they think of it the way I want them to, and more important that they interpret it in their own unique way. That’s one of my favorite things about music, no two people are going to interpret things in the same way. If someone leaves my performance thinking about what I played and why I played it, then I have accomplished my goal.
