This is the 7th track that I wrote for a soundwalk around the National Botanical Gardens in Dublin than can be accessed through the Echoes app here: https://explore.echoes.xyz/collections/43DUnE46Sa8IGfZq

The piece is in 8 geolocated sections, and uses location (field) recordings, synthesizers, and percussion. When a user arrives at a specific location in the National Botanical Gardens, that location’s music will be triggered on the Echoes app.

On 27 January 2023, myself and my four-year-old son went exploring some of our favourite spots in the National Botanical Gardens, and by making location (field) recordings collected sounds that excited us. I have taken these location recordings home, and augmented or ornamented them by articulating the resonant frequencies found on the recordings on synthesizers and other instruments I have at home. The location recordings you can hear are the result of naively listening to not only the environment around us, but our place, and our impact within it. As a result, there is no attempt to edit or remove ourselves from the recordings, and at times you can hear myself and my son discussing things that we hear and see with wonder and appreciation.

I hope you enjoy this little ornamented soundwalk guided by myself and a four-year-old, and enjoy exploring the beauty of the National Botanical Gardens.

Small, Far Away

This is an excerpt of 'ireland england.' The whole 35' piece lasts the duration of my regular flight between Dublin and Birmingham, and is an extended drone-based work for analog synthesizers and projected text. Through the marriage of continuous focused sound, statistical texts, and defamiliarisation, this work calls attention to the diverse range of journeys that Irish people have undertaken to England, both historically and in more recent times. 

I toured the work around the UK in 2018 supported by Culture Ireland’s GB18 Promoting Irish Arts in Britain scheme. It was performed in Brighton, Birmingham, London, Leicester and Southampton. 

This recording was performed live in a single take in December 2018, and recored in stereo to a Tascam DR-44WL

ireland england (excerpt)

This is an excerpt of the first track from my new album entitled 'and then you...' The album is made up of three tracks connected to my son's first year of life. The first track, 'and then you came into existence' (excerpt here) was written and recorded the night before my son was born. The second track, 'and then you smiled' was written when I was away from my son working in Birmingham and recorded whilst my students were on their break from my gamelan class. The third track, 'and then you had a sleep regression' is based on a recording of me shakily singing and trying to sooth my son to sleep in the wee hours of the morning. The pieces are scored and were recorded using a variety of FM and analog synths as well as some house recordings.

And Then You Came Into Existence (Excerpt)

I had the good fortune to meet Pauline Oliveros in 2014, when she was a featured composer of our Frontiers Festival in Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, but I have not yet met Jenny Holzer. I don’t know if Oliveros or Holzer knew each other personally, but they may have been familiar with each other’s work. 

Since 2014 or so, no artist has had more of an impact on my own work than Jenny Holzer. My work with projected text during performance came as a direct result of seeing her wonderful output, which demonstrates the power of the written word, how it can be presented, and how it can be received. In my mind, text is what links Holzer’s work to Oliveros’s output, as Oliveros is one of the early practitioners of using text to inform performers how to realise her pieces. Not only this, but Oliveros is again one of the pioneers of music constructed of long sustained tones, which has been a feature of the majority of the music I have written since this time. In a way, much of what many of us do is possible because Oliveros has given us the permission to do so. As I think composition benefits from things that don’t quite belong, there is an invitation in the score to do ‘something unexpected’ to the sound world, and on this recording you can hear some of my lived experience from the summer of 2018.
