Metropolitan Jazz Affair - Everybody Knows

Bridging past and future, and blending nostalgia with modernity, Julia Mestre’s musical universe expands with the first single ‘Sou Fera’ from her upcoming album. The Brazilian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer, who won a Latin Grammy as part of the brilliant Bala Desejo, is gearing up to unveil a new project that reaffirms her distinctive sound and aesthetics. Embarking on a new road trip, Julia ventures into uncharted territories with this new single. The track, infused with a road-inspired rhythm, was produced by Julia herself alongside Gabriel Quinto, Gabriel Quirino, and João Moreira.

Sun-drenched Balearic airiness mixed with a relaxed Brazilian boogie groove and city pop sensibilities, ‘Sou Fera’ is rich in the halcyon warmth of a beloved ‘80s mixtape. Julia’s breezy vocal timbre navigates a fusion of inﬂuences, including Brazilian icons Rita Lee and Marina Lima, British singer-songwriter Sade and contemporary Brazilian artist, Ana Frango Elétrico. Synth-laden melodies and walking bass, alongside Julia's light and sensual vocal delivery are a sweet taster to the magic of the forthcoming long player.

With its strong ‘80s inﬂuence balanced by contemporary elements, ‘Sou Fera’ captures the transition between the aesthetics of ARREPIADA and the new directions explored in the upcoming album. “The single embodies duality: outwardly, we exude strength and resilience, while inwardly, we are constantly healing and reinventing ourselves. I wanted to reﬂect this ‘wild woman’ spirit—her sensitivity and determination, always chasing dreams,” Julia explains.

“‘Sou Fera’ was created on the road, living the touring life. It reﬂects the present moment—the experience of being constantly in motion, discovering new cultures and places, but also dealing with the solitude and introspection that this lifestyle brings”, Julia elaborates.

Far Out Recordings are honoured to be working with master composer, arranger and pianist, Antonio Adolfo for the first time since releasing his Destiny album in 2007. This time we present the first ever vinyl reissue of his era-defining Viralata LP: An essential album from Brazil's majorly progressive heyday of late seventies jazz-funk. Viralata is a sacred artefact of Brazilian music, which Antonio himself describes as ‘a product of my hybrid musical influences that joins together flavours of marchinhas de carnaval, frevo, toada, classical, baião, mpb and jazz, etc’.

The album’s first track ‘Cascavel’ is the emotionally charged, celebratory dance anthem, which became a London jazz-dance classic in the early ‘90s after Far Out label boss Joe Davis discovered a handful of copies in a second hand shop in Sao Paulo and brought them back to London to sell to DJs like Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge. In recent years the track has been played out by the likes of Floating Points, Mr Scruff and Andrew Ashong, it was also the last song ever to play on the hallowed soundsystem of London’s beloved club Plastic People…

Viralata sits comfortably on the same pedestal as Azymuth's Light As A Feather and Joao Donato’s Quem É Quem, which is no co-incidence. All three keystone LPs were recorded and engineered by Toniniho, considered by many to be "the Brazilian Rudy Van Gelder" whose magic touches in the studio also helped to produce Marcos Valle's Previsão Do Tempo and Joyce's Água E Luz among many other holy grails and unassailable classics of soulful Brazilian music.

Antonio’s work has been widely performed by his legendary Brazilian contemporaries including Sergio Mendes, Emilio Santiago and Erasmo Carlos, but also by platinum-selling American icons including Stevie Wonder, Herb Alpert and Dionne Warwick. Following an early 70s spell of studying jazz in the USA, Viralata’s release in 1979 arrived at the height of a flourishing period of Antonio’s career. With his late 60s and 70s output following through on his influences of tropicalia, funk, MPB and easy listening, the almost entirely instrumental Viralata marked an apex for Brazilian jazz.

In the years following World War Two, Japan developed one of the most insatiable, dynamic and diverse markets for jazz. For a crucial period of little over a decade – from the late 1960s to the early 1980s – Japanese jazz culture progressed at an astonishing rate, producing an extraordinary array of artists, recordings and record labels that created some of the most forward thinking and impressive jazz to be committed to tape. This amazing journey is explored on ‘J Jazz’.
This compilation from BBE uncovers some of the most sought after and rare material from this period and pulls together key artists who shaped the post-war modern jazz scene in Japan.

‘J Jazz’ includes obscure and sought after rarities like the bass-driven power jazz of Koichi Matsukaze’s ‘Earth Mother’, the holy grail rarity of Aizawa Tohru Quartet’s ‘Dead Letter’ and the loping majesty of Takeo Moriyama’s ‘North Wind’. This collection takes the listener into deep spiritual jazz, post-modal impressionism and fierce dance-floor fusion with material from artists and composers whose names are generally only known to committed collectors of Japanese jazz. Fumio Karashima, Mitsuaki Katayama, Takeo Moriyama and Kiyoshi Sugimoto are among the names featured on an album aiming to shed a little light on the shadowy world of Japanese jazz clubs, tucked away in the neon backstreets. This music demands a wider audience and BBE are excited to deliver a landmark compilation, lifting the veil on this wonderful and mysterious area of the global jazz catalogue.

None of the tracks featured on ‘J Jazz’ have ever received an official release outside Japan before. The albums the tracks are taken from are extremely hard to find and often fetch huge sums on the collector’s circuit. Originally pressed in small numbers on independent and private labels such as Union, Johnny’s Disk, Whynot, ALM and VAP, these tracks are now available for everyone to enjoy.

Compiled by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, both long-time collectors of Japanese jazz, ’J Jazz’ brings together the very best in modern jazz from Japan, recorded during a critical period of musical and cultural transition that saw composers and musicians not only assert a new artistic identity but also create a lasting musical legacy.

Sean Gorham AKA Sean Innit has been a club and bar DJ since the very early 90's. 
His love of music has seen him work in various roles in the music industry through the years with releases on several labels including Moton and co-founding Midnight Riot alongside long term colleague Yam Who?.

During his time working with Yam Who? theyhave worked together on a large catalog of records including artists such as the legendary NYC band Odyssey and the godfather of Neo Soul; Amp Fiddler.

Sean is also well known as a vinyl head and was formerly a familiar face behind the counter at London's Love Vinyl record store in its early years, where he was often found spinning in-stores and club nights alongside some of the world's most prestigious DJs including Roger Sanchez, DJ Pierre, Gilles Peterson John Morales and UK's finest and much missed Phil Asher. 

You can mainly catch him playing eclectic sets on a selection of London's audiophile systems including his residency at Mad Cats in Shoreditch where his custom built Public Fidelity sound system resides, as well as regularly guesting at the world famous BBE store.
