Lightning Rod was written, with admiration, for Bethanne Walker in October 2013. The work is the result of attempting to exploit some particular aspects of her virtuosity, which provide unusual freedom for the composer. The piece relies on the interplay between changing speeds of notes and textures that create the impression of being multi-layered within one instrument. The narrative of the music also hinges on a trajectory to extremes of register, with an acrobatic intensity that the performer must navigate. Additionally, the rhythmic language is highly precise and exploits the tension between mechanical accuracy in notation and natural human fluctuations that are part of the process of transforming the score into music.

The Last Rose of Summer

Florian Helgath (conductor), Heather Cotrell (violin), and the Munich-based Via-Nova-Chor premiere this piece, which I wrote for the conductor in 2014. The piece is a loose adaptation of the 15th century lovesong, "Mille regretz," which tells of a lover's sorrow upon departing his love on a long, maybe terminal, voyage.

The original song is sung at the beginning. My adaptation begins at 3:38.

A Concert for Christmas

Twenty-five-year-old composer Sean Salamon's music has been performed by ensembles, both professional and amateur, in 20 countries around the globe. In 2013, Salamon founded Ping, an early music/new music vocal quintet with whom he has given concerts across the USA, garnering praise from critics and audiences. Ping has collaborated with artists as diverse as hip-hop artist Frzy— and a concert series with Chatham Baroque in which the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review called Salamon's performance "superb... as stylish as [he was] expressive."

Salamon holds a master's degree in composition from London's Royal Academy of Music (2015), and a bachelor's from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music in Pittsburgh (2014). While studying at Carnegie Mellon, he was the music director for the CMU Originals, an award-winning all-male a cappella group, and the composer-in-residence and baritone choral scholar at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Pittsburgh.

Salamon works during the day as a headhunter in Midtown Manhattan and, during his free time, enjoys taking photographs of his friends.
