Princess Music is comprised of five musicians that play with chamber orchestras of varying size. The group is fronted by Tyler Ludwick, who orchestrates playful complexities and rich harmonies with a mixture of expertise and mirth. He applies his classical finger-style to an electric guitar, composition skills to string and woodwind textures, and passion for percussion to the polyrhythmic and irregular meters of the music. Princess Music displays high emotional and intellectual IQ and expresses poignant narratives found within the arrangements, which embody subtle pop sensibilities that create a sanctuary for even the most casual listener.

Princess Music began as a humble project of composer Tyler Ludwick. It has since become a tonal hologram crafted from his obsession with walruses and orchestral music. Equipped with a desire to convey purity, passion, and the power of the chamber orchestra, Princess Music is releasing their debut album, Odobenidae. Odobenidae is fashioned as a song-cycle of eight pieces, undulating between the dungeonesque depths of classic rock grime, and the playful heights of bantering woodwinds and strings. It is sonically sewn together to form the chimerical world of the walrus. Never lacking in drama or caprice, Princess Music has crafted an album intent on mirroring the nature of our lives.

On 16th September Ed Askew will be releasing his latest record ‘For The World’ on Tin Angel Records. Anyone who loves ‘outsider’ folk legends from Tom Rapp to Roy Harper or Gary Higgins to Peter Grudzien knows the name of the legendary bard Ed Askew.

Filled with Askew’s trademark baroque odes the album builds up to an unrelenting crescendo of harp flourishes and harmonica. Askew’s charismatic warbling vibrato vocals, at times, are reminiscent of both Simon Finn and David Bowie. ‘For The World’ continues to offer an insight into his life although it is notably less heartbreaking than it’s predecessors. These charming songs of love and escapism capture both the spirit of Askew along with the hearts of musicians (and fans) who have been with him for decades.

Ed Askew recently toured the US for the first time 2011, as a result of the tour it was decided that Jerry DeCicca of the Black Swans and producer of the final recordings of Larry Jon Wilson (Drag City/ 1965 Records), would assist Ed in making his first non-solo album.

Down the street from the Cotton Club, they spent a week in a West Harlem warehouse that September. Ed Askew was joined by Jay Pluck, two members of The Black Swans' Tyler Evans (banjo, tiple, electric guitar-- and now a permanent member of Ed's entourage), Canaan Faulkner (bass) and Eve Searls (backing vocals), along with Mary Lattimore (Meg Baird, Thurston Moore) on harp.

Later down the road, electric guitar was added by fellow outsider Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and backing vocals on 3 songs by super fan Sharon Van Etten. The results of those sessions were to become the album ‘For The World’.

Ed Askew is a painter and singer-songwriter who lives in New York City. Born in Stamford, Connecticut, he moved to New Haven to study painting at Yale Art School in 1963.

After graduating from art school in 1966, Askew was called up for the draft. Not feeling particularly enthusiastic about going to war at age 26 (the Navy tried to convince him that he should apply for officer training!), he looked for a teaching job and found work at a private prep school in Connecticut. It was while teaching he started making songs; he also acquired his Martin Tiple (a 10 string lute-like instrument originally from Columbia) at this time. "I must have written 25 songs that semester; all of the material on Unicorn and possibly some stuff on Little Eyes."

He then recorded his second album for ESP, Little Eyes, but it sat in the vaults for almost 40 years until it saw a limited release in 2007.

The singer-songwriter moved to New York for a few months in 1967 where he met Bernard Stolman of ESP Disk' (Pearls Before Swine, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler), who offered him a contract. That year Ed's first album was released, Ask the Unicorn (on Parlophone in the UK) and it quickly disappeared into folk-psych obscurity.

In support of the limited vinyl/ digital re-release of the 80's era cassette tape Imperfiction, Ed was accompanied on piano by Jay Pluck and travelled with tour mates, The Black Swans.

"One of my earliest memories is seeing Tom from Tom & Jerry dressed as a conductor, tapping the lectern with his baton and whooshing his impressive & mane-like Beethoven style wig before leading his cartoon feline orchestra into some frenetic score. Turns out that Jerry wants to conduct too so they end up fighting for the position. I always felt Jerry was a bit of a dick. He really makes Tom's life a total misery.

Whilst playing the drums on this song I developed a third arm which really helped with the 2000 BPM snare roll. "

The Saddest Orchestra (It Only Plays For You) by Ed Harcourt

I had the great pleasure to work with Metric and with Emily Haines on her solo record a few years back. I wore an Elliott Smith t-shirt the day I went to Paris to try to sign them, and had no idea that Emily was such a big Elliott Smith fan until I next met them. 

They recorded this cover of 'Between the Bars' for Rolling Stone magazine, and hopefully no-one involved will mind me sharing this today, a decade on from Elliott's death - there's only a lofi video rip of it online that I can find.

New Single: In My Time of Dust

Following the critical praise for his new mini-album, and the silver-disc awarded success of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s new album (which he produced and co-wrote), British songwriter Ed Harcourt confirms new single ‘Time of Dust’, which includes a brand new track ‘Sweet Malaise’ featuring Ren Harvieu (hear it http://youtu.be/O0-PDxCBego​ ).  

‘Time of Dust’ is the title track of Harcourt’s 28-minute long mini-album which was released earlier this year on CCCLX (the new label set-up by Drowned in Sound’s editor). It was described by one scribe as “cinematic hip-hop”, by another as “post-grave” and the Guardian’s Alexis Petridis talked of the track’s “gothic grandeur”. Elsewhere, comparisons have veered from Eels to James Blake via Elbow and that Tom Waits chap.

Like the rest of the mini-album, there are still Ed’s trademark pianos and bitter-sweet lyrical twists, but a darkness has descended and the record marks the beginning of a slightly gloomier new sound. 

Thirteen years ago, Harcourt’s career began with a mini-album named Maplewood, “Time of Dust feels not unlike its distant cousin” says Ed. “I’ll soon be heading into the studio with Flood (Nine Inch Nails, PJ Harvey, etc) to work on an album of evil songs, but before I set sail for the edge of the world, I wanted to break people in gently. Think of Time of Dust as a piece of the map I’ll be using to navigate the fog and fire. Or maybe it’s the creak of the floorboard before the wolf pounces?”

2013 was a busy year for Harcourt. From co-writing and producing a new album for Sophie Ellis-Bextor, to festival appearances at the likes of Glastonbury, Latitude, and a headline slot at End of the Road, his dog-eared diary has never seen so much action. Recently, Harcourt has also been musical director for Burberry’s London Fashion Week party and Beck’s Song Book at the Barbican, written songs with amongst others Kathryn Williams and Lisa Marie-Presley; composed soundtracks for three movies due in 2014, recorded collaborations with Rae & Christian and Nouvelle Vague’s Melanie Pain, and brewed his own beer (an ‘Edwardian Brown Ale’) with Signature Brew, which after the initial test run of 3000 bottles sold out, the production is being ramped up. 2013 also saw his sixth studio album, Back Into the Woods, released to much acclaim, and then there was that #WIZARDBOUNCE “album” which he gave away for April Fool’s Day...
