When it comes to living conscious and carefree, one of the key skills to master is the ability to bounce back from adversity. Because, let’s face it: life doesn’t always deliver what we want. If we spend all our time railing against what is, we will never gain the equanimity we need to truly live in peace.

Of course, developing this kind of emotional resiliency is easier said than done. To get practical tips on how to navigate unwanted experiences, we decided to speak to an expert: Bruce Lisker, who was wrongfully convicted of murdering his mother in 1983 and spent over 26 years in jail before his conviction was overturned when courts found it was based on false evidence. In short, he was framed.

Today, Bruce is happily married and is an outspoken and articulate advocate for the reform of the criminal justice system. We tracked him down recently to discuss not his ordeal, but his well-honed strategies for real-world resilience.

In part one, I talk with several people who were close to Julia to find out: biographer Bob Spitz, and her journalist grand-nephew Alex Prud'homme who co-wrote Julia’s memoir, "My Life in France". I also speak with Julia’s long-time friend and editor Judith Jones who discovered Child by publishing her iconic first book, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", and who worked with her throughout her career.
