Taken from the CD, 'Estuary', Shipping Forecast, Donegal, is a poem by Seán Street originally written for BBC Radio 4's 1998 National Poetry Day celebration. It is published in 'Time Between Tides' (Rockingham Press). Estuary is a sequence of poems about rivers, tides and harbours, and is a collaborative project between Seán Street, Neil Campbell and Perri Alleyne-Hughes.

Shipping Forecast, 150th anniversary

Sometimes the smallest sounds and voices, given a context, speak the most eloquently. The Polish poet and radio producer, Jozef Czechowicz was born in Lublin and worked in radio in Warsaw before WW2. When war broke out, he returned to his native town, about which most of his poetry was written, believing himself to be safer there. He was killed by a bomb on 9 September 1939, aged 36. Few of his possessions survive, but there is a little handbell, used by him to lift his mood when he found himself in a dark place. This crude and tiny fragmentary recording is of that bell, a sound that he once heard. For all its momentary nature, it's a voice.

This is a short extract taken from a longer interview I made with Chet Atkins on Sunday 18 November, 1973, in Chet's dressing room backstage at the Empire Pool, Wembley, after he had just topped the bill at the Nashville Cavalcade show. The bill also included, as I recall,  Dottie West and Bobby Bare, among others.
