it was the first time i'd had the opportunity to dj in the desert in over 6 years, and with all that's happened since then, it meant a lot.

seeing old friends, playing tunes, listening to talented, new (to me) djs, and blissing out on nature's grandeur for a weekend was the best way to blow off some of the steam from the last few years.

i also got to debut some new musical toys and tricks picked up over the last few years that i hope you enjoy.

Live@Palm Friday: Morning

So, for this year's Good Friday, I dug this out of my "back catalogue", along with a few old tapes and such. 

Yes, I'll be sharing a couple more oldies after this, but for now, here's a taste of what I was throwing down 20+ years ago, while running up and down the West Coast. 

Dark, Progressive sounds seemed to resonate with California, Oregon, and Seattle folk at the time (2000-2001-ish), and this mix was my best stab at that. 

Fun Fact: The name comes from working in my basement "studio" at the time when my dear friend/roommate was trying to get his startup off the ground. 

I played music while they coded. 

They were Havoc Studios, and I was the DJ playing tracks on the washing machine. They hurled both criticism and encouragement while we all worked, we all drank way too much red wine, and somehow things got done, on all fronts. It was a strangely productive time, and just fun.

The Havoc Sessions v.1

So, for this year's Good Friday, I dug this out of my "back catalogue", along with a few old tapes and such.

ps: This second installment of "The Havoc Sessions" was, unfortunately, a sort of "Dear John" letter to Seattle, a city I adore, but had to leave to chase work down South.

I hope the beautiful darkness, and twilight joy that Washington offers is audible in my "goodbye".

The Havoc Sessions v.2

My trip down memory lane is now at an end, with this, the first CD I ever recorded. 

I think I printed this mix in late 1999, 4 years after I picked up my first 1200s. It's a compilation of the Trance and Techno that I had been bewitched by when I first started going out to clubs and outdoor parties in 1994. 

30 years later, I think this still holds up. 
I hope you will too.

This track was supposed to be an ode to Mark Franklin's "Release to the System", a song I adored off of the Warp Records' "Artificial Intelligence v.2" compilation. I hope I got close to the mark, even if it did end up being its own thing.

This ditty was something I came up with while playing around with Arturia's VST collection. Their emulations of analogue synths were really inspiring, and once I got that bassline down, it was off to the races.

Owl Farm 2024 was special - like coming home, but to a place where so much was new.

For a while I've been chatting with my old friend (and one of the hosts for this lovely weekend) on the phone, telling him that I suspected, from his words, that something special was brewing in Reno. 

Of course he was too humble to admit it, but over the weekend of Owl Farm, I got to see it in person, and I'm happy to say that I was right: what started as a tribute to a lost friend has truly become a great desert adventure.

The enthusiasm was everywhere - it felt like a new thing to so many there; even the other, older heads seemed to be caught up in it, and that made for a truly great weekend.

I tried to bring my best, as did other members of my old Good Friday Crew, and I believe we did, adding to the enormous effort, collaboration, and attention to detail that all the others involved brought as well.

It was a pleasure to see, and I hope that comes across in the music here.

Also, I can't wait to go back!

Live@Owl Farm 2024: Friday Night

Owl Farm 2024 was special - like coming home, but to a place where so much was new.

For a while I've been chatting with my old friend (and one of the hosts for this lovely weekend) on the phone, telling him that I suspected, from his words, that something special was brewing in Reno. 

Of course he was too humble to admit it, but over the weekend of Owl Farm, I got to see it in person, and I'm happy to say that I was right: what started as a tribute to a lost friend has truly become a great desert adventure.

The enthusiasm was everywhere - it felt like a new thing to so many there; even the other, older heads seemed to be caught up in it, and that made for a truly great weekend.

I tried to bring my best, as did other members of my old Good Friday Crew, and I believe we did, adding to the enormous effort, collaboration, and attention to detail that all the others involved brought as well.

It was a pleasure to see, and I hope that comes across in the music here.

Also, I can't wait to go back!

Owl Farm 2025: sometimes sequels CAN be better than their predecessors.

What a weekend of amazing music, company, and adventure!

Once again, the good folk in Reno came together for an epic weekend, along with a number of new and familiar faces, springing out from the Pacific Northwest, San Diego, Arizona, and the Midwest.

It was fantastic.

This collection of tunes and ideas was meant to kick off a medley of Breakbeat sets Saturday evening, courtesy of the old Good Friday gang. It wasn't latenight yet, but the mission was clear: meld early evening into the oncoming insanity in a firm but organic manner.

I hope that comes through as well in the recording as it did in the moment.

As always, I tried to bring my best, as did other members of my old Good Friday Crew (and many others). It was just a small part of the enormous effort, collaboration, and attention to detail that everyone involved brought.
