Sean, I played with Derek on the Tom Joes tour i the US and Japan in 1973.  Keith Jourdan and I were in the trumpet section with him and we were amazed every night by his consistency and command of the trumpet.  More than that, however, Derek was a fun and friendly guy to hang with, even though he was in a class of his own as a musician.  I have fond memories of those times all these years later.

I produced this for FSM Online and local radio shortly after John Barry passed away in 2011. The idea was to have a career timeline of the musicians that worked with him pay tribute, as it was very much part of John Barry's own early life.

My father also worked with him, but alas he wasn't well enough to speak and passed away 3 months before John Barry did.

I spoke with Derek Watkins in February 2011, shortly after John Barry passed away and we spoke about the legacy of music that they both created together. They are now reunited in that great concert hall in the sky.
