Calgary artist Kaley Kinjo has spent the past ten years becoming a very busy and sought after musician. Playing with The Plaid Tongued Devils (2004-2011), touring western Canada and parts of Europe with them, sharing the stage with such acts as: Lisa Brokop, Jim Cuddy, Sarah Harmer, 54-40, Trooper, Patricia Conroy, The Sadies, The Great Lake Swimmers, Rachelle Van Zanten... As well, in the past five years, Kinjo has performed or recorded with over 5 dozen different acts and artists.
Although Kaley is usually noted as a sought-after bassist, this young artist demonstrates plenty of talent on piano and guitar as well.  Never one to limit himself, Kaley’s music consists of a wide variety of styles including roots, ska, folk, soul, rock, punk, country, pop and even reggae influences. Each song is an entity in itself but somehow remains familiar, comfortable, and yet still distinctly unique. Intelligent, insightful, and often humorous lyrics are only brought more to light by the richness and purity of Kinjo’s voice. Soulful rhythms and ear-lingering melodies line the artist’s songs and grab the listener’s attention.

Postcards From the County was recorded by men incarcerated in the Pittsburgh Institution near Kingston Ontario, Canada.

Every note was sung or played in jail, and is given freely and anonymously. The album is available here free for your enjoyment, to download and share, and hopefully to encourage you to donate to our selected charities.

Inmates worked with musician/producer Hugh Christopher Brown, writing and arranging songs in the prison chapel, which the men helped convert into a recording studio every week for the sessions.

Participants learned production, arrangement, recording and engineering skills through the process. For those already experienced in music, it provided a regular outlet and means of working together with fellow inmates. For others, a first chance to hear themselves recorded prompted writing, musical research and development. The group was regularly joined by guest participants sharing talent and experiences including Sarah Harmer, Kate Fenner, Luther Wright, Sarah McDermott (Openhearts Society) and Pete Bowers (Gertrudes)

The album is musical exemplification of the proposed ‘Pros and Cons’ program, encouraging professional mentorship of inmates.

WHAT IS THE DEAL? Emilie Steele & The Deal are a grab bag of catchy hooks and lush tones delivered with buoyant and charismatic energy. Since this sonic trio formed in 2017 they have been dishing out unabashed indie rock tunes and winning the hearts of listeners. Steele’s animated delivery, vocal melodies and clever turns of phrase soar alongside the weaving riffs and driving rhythms of powerhouse bandmates baritone guitarist Jack Lockridge and drummer Jon Irwin. The band has been steadily growing a local following and captivating audiences with their catchy retro rock songs and vibrant delivery. Their recent feature at the Wolfe Island Winter Ball in March 2019 has put this triad on the radar as a band to look out for 2019. They have shared the stage with Julie & The Wrong Guys, Fast Romantics, Donovan Woods and Sarah Harmer. Their eponymous six-track EP is out now!

We the inmates of Pittsburgh, who participated in the project, are extremely pleased to present to you this collection of music, produced entirely inside Pittsburgh Institution.

IT IS A LABOUR BORN OF LOVE
A love of music and the joy it can bring to the soul in a place where a soul can be lost.

IT IS A LABOUR BORN OF RESPECT
Respect for the many individuals who guided us through this process. The musicians who shared their songs, the talent they so freely gave, and the inspiration we gleaned from them.

IT IS A LABOUR BORN OF DESIRE
The desire to give something to society. A society we have each wronged in our own way. It was determined at the beginning of this project that any monies that may be derived from this should be directed to charitable endeavours. It gives us a great deal of satisfaction to be able to do this.

It is for this reason that we hope you enjoy the fruits of our labours.

We have been given so much joy through this experience. This is what we now pass on to you.
