this is a 4-track acoustic version of "seasons fade..." from the 'red tree' record. It's a very different version of the song, the way we had it worked out before heading to baltimore to record the record. It's the one song on the record that went through a major transformation once we started into the few days of pre-production when we got there. I remember hiding away for long periods of time in the vocal booth with an acoustic re-arranging the song and writing new parts. Kenny later sat down with me to help make sense of the parts and piece it together. The next day we played it all together in the studio, with peter and erik adding some crazy (good) rhythmic starts and stops.....and boom....record version....but here's where it started...

8. Nicolichnaya (Short Version)

another 'red tree' fact...one of the last things we recorded, not the last, but close to it, was a weird delay vocal part that i was dying to do for 'seasons fade...' It was on this old echo chamber unit that i have that's pretty busted up, but has some sweet rainbow lights that light up...i sang into it, let the echo take over, and manipulated it...i had first done this, and got the idea, at the end of this 'drum parade' recording. Listen to the end of this, and then listen about "3:35" into 'seasons fade'....it's subtle, but it's in there....fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

after 6 years, my piano skills haven't increased much beyond this. I wrote and recorded this song one night right after a tour...i know this because on the tour erik had lent me the hobbit to read...and for some reason that's what i wrote the lyrics about....singin book report? whatevs!......

i was going through some more old smother 4 track stuff that i had dumped onto my computer and came across this song. It is really old, like i'm going to guess 1997 or so. I did the best i could to salvage it....found a bunch of weird crap, but this is the only one that was actually decent enough to share. enjoy!
