The second album by nautical naughties Seas Of Mirth....

From the opening brace of Hark! The Headland Approacheth' we wanted to set you a scene. You're hearing the waves crashing  upon the rocks as you strive to sail around the dark headland in desperate search for a bay to moor up in. While our first album aimed to be a folk stomper our sophomore effort wears its prog roots unashamedly proud - not only in musical terms, or in its pseudo historical leanings - but in its healthy dose of absurdity. You will hear a fair few fingers of Jethro Tull, Yes, maybe a bit of Steelye Span here and there. But there is a good measure of world music in there too. I guess any travelled crew at sea is a cultural melting pot, so Celtic, Greek, African stylings were all welcome to the suggestions table. I heard someone call it an "afro-prog" record once, which, I liked, though grog rock probably has more marketing potential. Okay so there are no 25 minute sections here - no "movements," or self indulgent drum solos (okay maybe one) so it's not progressive in the Rick Wakeman, Journey to the Centre of the Earth sense. It's not full of existential pondering in the Floyd sense either. 
 
"The Curse Of The Conniving Lighthouse Sniper," Brandywine, 'Salt Man'  can all attest to being titillating titles expanded out into song-length themes, so maybe best not to go searching for any hidden messages. We still wanted to take you on a bit of a journey though.  'It's Raining, Men', complete with a fully fledged shipping forecast and a horror-surf sounding kind of arrangement, was our aim at conjuring a sonic storm of sorts. The songs are longer than our first album, there are more riffs, more otherworldly sounds, there's even an analog drum machine in 'Plankton Song' - a lament from a blue whale feeling sympathetic towards its staple food.
Sounds like heavy stuff, but hopefully it isn't...  let's say there is still a jig or two to be had. Much credit is due to (producer) Phil Booth, for helping us make everything sound wonderfully sea-sick and wobbly. The 150-year-old pump organ, Pearl, makes must also receive credit for her discordant drones. We like to think of the record as a brash, melodic, whimiscal adventure story; a sort of truncated nautical B-movie featuring a cast of characters raided from Hollywood's worst costume department. Like my mother said to me when she heard the demos: "It's fun. Don't think about it too much."
