Drumming virtuoso and contemporary Swiss musician https://soundcloud.com/arthur-hnatek provides a remix for Spin, the latest single from O’o’s forthcoming album Touche. 

The shapeshifting producer takes instrumental elements of the track, ramps up the tempo, and cradles O’o’s vocal hook amongst a breakbeat drum pattern reminiscent of the height of 90’s Warp Records’ legacy.

Today we premiere ‘Canines’, the B-side from Switzerland native Gaspard De La Montagne’s third EP for Swiss label Creaked Records. Despite releasing his debut with the label in 2013, the three records Gaspard has made for Creaked Records are his only releases. While the quantity of his output is surprisingly small, he makes up for it by ensuring a stringent quality control filter is applied to the music he puts in the public domain.

‘Canines’ is a moody piece of lo-fi techno, designed for the witching hours of the night. Scratchy drum patterns spin around a guttural synth line to paint an ominous picture, before Gaspard releases the tension three minutes in, letting his hi-hats loose to lift ‘Canines’ out of the dark.

The main idea behind this mix was to create a soothing, positive sonic landscape to help me clear my mind. The mix avoids going into abstract or darker territories, and in my opinion has a rather friendly vibe to it.

For our next installment of the AYLI podcast, we’re honored to bring you Berlin based, British born, Tanstaafl Records label-head John Osborn. He made his North America debut for us in 2012 alongside 2562 at the Beatbox, followed that morning by a 6 AM session at the legendary 222 Hyde.

We first discovered Osborn through his August ’10 Mnml Ssg podcast. It’s still a favorite of ours and helped to define our sound. John shared with us one of our earliest AYLI podcasts. It’s rare that we release second podcasts from artists and even rarer for us to release a podcast without an upcoming planned performance. However, when the opportunity came to release his second AYLI podcast, we jumped at it. Take a moment to dig into this special “after-hours” session. Quality.

Sebastian Mullaert and Kontra-Musik have been involved in a love affair for quite some time – an affair that even resulted in an offspring called The Dance that came out on Kontra-Musik last year. Sebastian Mullaert is of course first of all known as half of Minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of techno that Korg recently named a synthesizer after them. Lately, Sebastian has focused on his solo path under the Wa Wu We moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own Wa Wu We label, the cryptic S.E.L.F label and now on Kontra-Musik.

On the title track Travellers, Sebastian Mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven’t followed his move into Wa Wu We territory. You almost get the impression Sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90’s and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil. The sharp edges are now covered in smooth moss and the soundscape is immensely deep and moist. But it’s still a vibrant and very much effective track. Above all, it has loads of free space to let the listeners make up their own journeys as travellers into the world of sound created by Mullaert.

We float, on the flip side, is a beautiful and meditative ambient piece. It’s also the fastest way for the urban dweller to find him or herself floating in a serene lake surrounded by strong, green trees instead of floating in a sea of stress and anxiety. A set of headphones and this new release from Kontra-Musik and you’re there.

Autarkic: The Ransom Note Mix

“Daywalker” is a completely original, synthesised outing. A sleazy lead line charms and slithers upwards between layers of syncopated tabla and a sultry acidic groove. The tune spins and twists around this central oriental theme, ever-evolving as layers of detailed percussion and ad-libbed melodies intensify the tone.

Known for his work as one half of Minilogue, Sebastian is also an accomplished solo artist with new material ready to roll. As an artist that is constantly evolving he has taken a bold new direction in his sonic exploration, immersing himself in the neo-classical scene and joining forces with one of the top 10 philharmonic orchestras in the world - Tonhalle Zürich. Working with great care and innovation he has created a truly immersive audio-visual performance experience, combining a mesmerising integration of electronic and classical instrumentation, with a visual art installation based on breath taking nature landscapes shot from a helicopter perspective. Sebastian's deep connection with music can be traced back to his formative years; from playing the organ and violin as a child, to performing in orchestras, string quartets and pop band, progressing into electronic music in his late teens. Discovering house and techno in the mid-nineties was the catalyst behind a revolution in his life, he set out on a new musical pathway, to promote the simplicity of being. Throughout the late nineties he experimented with electronic sounds, forming cult duo Minilogue with a friend and releasing with Crosstown Rebels, Traum Schallplatten, Wagon Repair and more, plus two albums via Cocoon – ‘Animals’ (2008) and ‘Blomma’ (2013). In 2014, the duo decided to take a break and invest their time in solo projects and Sebastian has since been hard at work cultivating a collection of new music already snapped up by hugely influential labels such as R&S sub-label Apollo, Drumcode, Hypercolour and Minus.

Sebastian Mullaert’s live performances are awe-inspiring, combining technical wizardry with energy, atmosphere and euphoria, you only have to watch his “Interpretations” performance for XLR8R or Boiler Room appearance for examples of his prowess. Recognition of his aptitude has led him to perform at institutions and festivals such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Fabric - London, Concrete - Paris, The Block - Tel Aviv and Blackmarket - NYC. 

Sebastian’s collaborative work runs parallel to his solo endeavours and he has teamed up with several figures in the techno world to produce some unforgettable releases. Collaborators include Mathew Jonson, Eitan Reiter, Aril Brikha and Ulf Eriksson, and releases have come via underground platforms such as Hypnus, Mule Musiq and Kontra Musik. He also produces under the alias Wa Wu We, offering a serene, understated take on the techno aesthetic. Furthermore he is involved in the new Be Yokai project, a trio formed of Sebastian, Douglas Holmquist and Kristoffer Ström. The three men formed a natural alliance, finding their flow after several sessions together. Their first EP is signed to Hypercolour sub-label Space Hardware, with a live show and more music in the pipeline.

Sebastian Mullaert is already established as a potent force in the world of electronic music. Serious about reminding people to BE on the dance floor, or in the comfort of their own home, the music he makes is deep, progressive and utterly unique. Whatever the future holds, you can be sure he will continue to channel the infinite energy that surrounds us into every facet of his life.
