Face Machine inhabits the blurred threshold between the human and the synthetic, where identity becomes fluid and is constantly rewritten. Drifting between melodic techno, underground trance and electro-pop, the album unfolds like a network of unstable selves - mirrors folding into mirrors, names dissolving into signals. Vocals shift between male and female, merging with abstract textures until the human voice becomes something unbound, a mutable instrument suspended between body and machine. Each track carves its own passage through luminous, volatile atmospheres, yet all are tethered by a shared sonic architecture of detuned oscillators, layered melodic counterpoint, and synthesis timbres that breathe with organic motion.

These twelve tracks move through states of emergence and disappearance - memory scattering, identity refracting, presence dissolving into signal. Wordless chants, whispered fragments, and spectral harmonies drift like residues of selves that never fully arrive. Within this landscape, rhythm and texture intertwine: polyrhythmic layers build and collapse, melodic threads blur into complex harmonic tides, and shifting tonalities open portals into new emotional terrain. Face Machine doesn't offer resolution; instead, it lingers in the spaces where perception falters and technology reshapes what it means to exist. It is an album of thresholds and transformations - a meditation on how we become, lose, and reinvent ourselves in an age where even our voices can belong to someone, or something, else.

The latest release by the Mexican avant-garde label Akumandra is founder Sainte Vie’s three track auditive voyage: From Desolate Places and Forgotten Times. Going beyond previous experimentation with sound assemblage and sampling from non-western musical traditions, Sainte Vie crafts his signature mesmerizing soundscapes by combining dreamlike synth textures, monumental drops and vibrant melodies that feel deeply melancholic. Insistent arpeggios and expansive build ups bind the tracks together in an ebb and flow of dynamic energy. 

High Seas 
Overlaid synth patterns, like waves, propel us into a mixed-percussion drop that settles on a harmonic calm before another surge of synth arpeggios drive us farther along into the thrilling sensation of voyage. 
		
Whale
Disembodied vocals, like cetaceans communicating, echo each other, creating a ghostly undercurrent to the vigorous percussion and futuristic synth arpeggios. 

Darko
Backed by an eerie melody and punctuated by a lead-heavy bass drum, a deep, guttural voice plunges us into the dark flow of time.

Spectral in theme and profoundly engaged with the sensorial quality of music, Sainte Vie’s EP transports the listener to a place that feels distant like uncharted waters, yet familiar like a memory.

Carlita (@carla-frayman) is a talented classical musician and multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for electronic experimentation and sonic ethnography. Mixing the digital with the analogue, the classic with the contemporary, Carlita ensures music made of surprise and craft. A mainstay of the New York City based Bespoke collective, she draws influence from Turkish Psychedelia to classic Rock n’ Roll to eclectic world sounds to field recordings, resulting in a sonic kaleidoscope of culture and experience. This approach shines on the latest release from Carlita, a guitar driven journey into both past and future, alongside a talented international trio of remixers.

Carlita’s Electric Highway bookends itself with its two original productions. First, the EP's eponymous track is a steady, driving piece of guitar infused psychedelia. It is a perfect representation of Carlita’s approach as a producer and performer with her love for electric riffs shining through. Wrapping things up is the peak time Movimiento. Featuring Carlita’s own vocals, Movimiento sends the EP’s electricity into overdrive to destinations of community and togetherness - where we once again converge on international dancefloors. On remix duties, a trio of talented artists offer their interpretations of Electric Highway. First off, Italo-Mexican producer Concret strips things down, interjecting a timely speech from James Baldwin into an activist interpretation perfect for our uncertain times. Then, New York’s Wild Dark punch up the low end with a journey into bliss all their own. Finally, Tel Aviv’s Jenia Tarsol twists, turns, and distorts Electric Highway as only a seminal master of musical experience like him can.

With Electric Highway, Carlita adds a new dimension to her relationship with The Gardens of Babylon. She has literally traveled the world with them, sharing stages with the likes of Red Axes in New York to the golden sand beaches of Epizode Festival Vietnam. Now, with Electric Highway, she joins the likes of Geju and Jacob Groening as part of its record label family.

KOMPAKT welcomes back Copenhagen’s WhoMadeWho. Tomas Barfod’s penchant for electronic music poetically juxtaposed with Tomas Høffding and Jeppe Kjellberg’s respective backgrounds in rock and jazz, gives their music an electrifying combination of sounds, merging a variety of influences to produce a unique sonic fingerprint that is emotive, irresistible and immensely satisfying. 

Though we both have yet to strike a note together since the release of their 2012 full length “Brighter” (KOM 254), WhoMadeWho have been remarkably productive. With two full lengths, a DJ mix for Watergate’s series and releasing two of 2019’s most played out club tracks together with Rampa (Innervisions) and Artbat (Watergate Records), the trio have found themselves diving more and more into the world of electronic music, tapping into their goldmine of connections within the scene to spearhead an array of collaborations. 

Synchronicity is all about ‘meaningful coincidences’ – bringing interpretation to bear on connections that have no actual causal relationship. It’s a canny concept to pin onto Copenhagen trio WhoMadeWho’s latest album, which sees them return to Kompakt for the first time since 2012’s Brighter.

This re-established connection helps us to understand the synchronicity at play, the way that the WhoMadeWho core ave built an album around collaboration with friends and peers, much as Kompakt is all about cross-connections and family. On Synchronicity, WhoMadeWho call on friends old and new – Michael Mayer, Echonomist, Adana Twins, Alex Boman, Robag Wruhme, Frank Wiedemann, Sainte Vie, Mano Le Tough, Marc Piñol, Rebolledo, and Perel is the cast list; WhoMadeWho direct the material, shaping it into one lovingly flowing gem of dance-pop glory.

There’s something particularly generous about hearing an album as all-inclusive and open-hearted as Synchronicity in the midst of the profound social and cultural shifts we’re currently experiencing. While some songs on Synchronicity were recorded together, in real time, such as the collaborations with Adana Twins and Rebolledo, most of them have taken place via long distance, thanks to the pandemic lockdown. But you don’t need to know who was where to understand either the magnesium-flare melancholy of “Sooner”, recorded with Piñol, which has you holding your breath with the gentle thrill of the song’s lush melody, or the stomping strut of the following Adana Twins collaboration, “Shadow Of Doubt”.

Elsewhere, there’s the stentorian robot voice at the heart of “Hamstring”, where they’re joined by Michael Mayer; the lustrous headsoak of “Twenty Tears”, a tender intervention by Rebolledo; the strip-light, slow-motion disco strut of “Cecil”, produced alongside Echonomist; or the glittering, arpeggio dreamwork that Perel helps sculpt into shape on “Der Abend birgt keine Ruh.”… Really, there’s so much to celebrate here, a panoply of pleasures. From pop revelations to dancefloor delirium to slow-burning brooders, Synchronicity is just that; a space for the joys of the unexpected to collide, and to be given meaning by their coincidental co-existence in WhoMadeWho’s beautiful world.
