Mermaid's Longing

Music for the Freedom of Your Soul

*** My story ***
When I was sixteen I had a sudden and irresistible desire to learn to play piano. I attended the traditional lessons for a few days, but felt suppressed and incapable. Instead I decided to teach myself. In the beginning, I simply pressed different keys slowly exploring the singular sounds, harmonies and melodies by trial and error, it sounds like a slow progress, but much to my surprise I learned quickly - probably because I loved it. At the same time, I also started experimenting with mixing sounds on a computer. My emotional mind thought what a great way this would be to live and work, but my rational ambitions decided it would wiser to work for a solid dependable career as a software developer, instead of diving into the uncertainty of art. For more than twelve years I played the piano only when I was alone. I was improvising all the time, sometimes being able to play for hours without a break. My hands were flying across the keyboard and my whole self was dissolving into the music. I fell into a deep meditative state just by playing. But I also had periods when I did not touch the piano at all for several months.

And it happened when I turned thirty that I was with some friends at a big café and there was a guy playing live piano music. When he had a break I asked him if I could try it as well. So I played to a crowd of total strangers for the first time. I was quite shocked afterwards when several people came to me and said that they loved my music and asked if there was a CD available. I had to say not only that there is no CD whatsoever, but that the whole performance was improvised - so the music existed just right at that moment and could never be replicated. This experience gave me confidence to play several more times in a few more public places and with dismay and great gratitude was accepted with similar positivity. I learned that I gained the most joy from this music when I shared the emotion behind it with others. I believe each of us has talents that are gifts we are given and we are to share them with each other to enrich our lives. So I invested in new keyboards and sound equipment and started recording my music. I created this website to share it with you. I hope you will enjoy it! Seeing all that love and joy that my music brings to people is the most rewarding feeling that I know. I am grateful for it every day.
