Porter Brook’s experimentation with Live Coding considers the reality of dance music culture in the 2020’s to be inseparably mediated through algorithms and digital space. The attention economy and the corporate co-optation of the underground has dissolved a large part of dance music culture in an acrid solvent of content creation.

Prefrontal Asymmetry liberates itself within the overstimulation which this generational change demands of us. By seldomly evoking traditional motifs and clichés of the dance-floor amongst fierce algorithmic noise and repurposed snippets of short-form digital media, Prefrontal Asymmetry provides an alternative and optimistic thesis on the perceived annihilatory Zeitgeist of Gen-Z Clubland:

“Nothing can be more freeing than resigning oneself to onslaught of stimulus, and rejecting the sincerity of such content in favour of heartfelt experimentation, cherished relationships and the joy of experience.”

This modus operandi is bolstered by collaborative work with Lagos Born, Manchester Based vocalist LINTD [@L1NTD], who provides technologically mutated ruminations on self esteem, value, and fear within our contemporary landscape. A remix from GAEL [@gaelabakarova] on the B side further contextualises and physicalises the message.

Kop-Z first heard the term "A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic System" in a book he found in an old junk shop in Manchester city centre for 2 quid. Its describes humans as systems constantly battling the entropy and world’s challenges around us in order to survive:

"Whilst this is true, we are also systems that work together. We think, learn, grow, and create beautiful things like art and music. I love this contrast. There are many similar contrasts in the spaces we inhabit: day and night, love and hate, going to bed at 9 p.m. or 9 a.m.”

He articulates this contrast by juxtaposing vignettes of human life with unrelentingly kinetic probability programming systems. Autobiographical field recordings, manually looped vinyl and childhood video games melt into psychedelic waves of sub-focussed pressure.
Throughout the record, these themes are engaged by a psyche imprinted by influences such as jungle, footwork, noise, rave, post punk, reggae, the Curry Mile and a river in the Peak District. This results in an auditory fabric that interlocks contrasting physical and digital systems across temporal contexts. Rejoicing in the expression of lived human experience, whilst surrendering to the chaos of the machine.

SB002: Kop-Z - A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic System EP [Previews]

Smooch Soundsystem is the opening act of LINTD’s three-part project, reclaiming Black Utopia through the technologies of sound.

Emerging from the collaborative force of Nigerian negro-gothic musician LINTD and Sheffield producer Porter Brook, this piece was recorded live at the White Hotel in December 2022.

Smooch Soundsystem celebrates the machines of a pro-Black utopia by centralising the Soundsystem as an extension of the human form, acting as the interface between flesh, technology, and community. Rooted in call and response, the performance centralises the Soundsystem as the mechanism of this symbiosis.

LINTD captures the innocence and tension of hope, as well as the struggle to reclaim one's existence in a world where rest is denied to Black bodies, even in death. By channelling Sun Ra’s call to be “endless, immeasurable, eternal, impossible,” LINTD invokes the power of speculative world-building to explore a Black utopia of immeasurable abundance.

“The first step in acknowledging the impossible dream: to create, preserve, and crystallise Black Utopia within our music, our art, our filmmaking, and our speculative world-building practice.”
