For the 27th edition of our DECENNIUM series we bring you this exclusive DJ set from Natural Selection resident @second_storey. 

One of the greatest things about 2020 for us was bringing Second Storey (Alec) into the Natural Selection family. Born and bred in UK, now based in Berlin, Alec has been at the forefront of the underground Electronic Music scene for well over a decade and releasing on mammoth labels such as Frustrated Funk, TRUST and Aus Music is fully testament to that. A professional drummer with a lifelong passion for music and a love of experimenting with new sounds, Alec isn’t constrained by boundaries, which is one of the reasons why he has slotted in perfectly with our musical ethos. His roots in bass-heavy Techno and Electro pulse throughout his tracks, whilst he meticulously cares for the defining quality to his craft; Funk. Alec's tracks regularly feature in sets / mixes from an extensive list of heavyweight artists, most notably in recent times, the legendary Autechre. 

Alec has DJ'd and played live all over the UK and Europe. His debut set for Natural Selection as part of our collaboration with Delsin Records, was sadly postponed due to the pandemic, however we were ecstatic to finally have Alec cement his residency at our live stream at FOLD in August last year, playing alongside Ansome, Sigha and fellow residents Kodah, Voicedrone and SWARMM. Keep your ears to the ground for the new date for our Delsin collaboration in which Alec forms part of one of our most lethal lineups to date.

To have such an esteemed artist with us on the Natural Selection frontline is an absolute honour and we are proud to be able to present to you his exquisitely crafted DECENNIUM mix.

2013 has been a pretty special year for Houndstooth. In December 2012 we were staring down the barrel of a daunting release schedule all giddy from the excitement of it but understandably nervous at the same time. It’s all the same energy though, nerves and excitement and the artists we’ve worked with and released have done more to inspire us and stoke our sense of pride over the past 12 months than anyone or anything else. So as a bit of a thank you to them and as a means of underlining our first year in existence, we asked our roster to remix each other’s music and create something uniquely Houndstooth for the year’s end. 

HTH vs HTH is a 7-track EP that pits the production processes of our artists against one another with Special Request and Akkord tackling each other’s stems whilst Call Super and Second Storey trade tracks alongside interwoven interpretations of House of Black Lanterns and _Unsubscribe_ and a chilling Snow Ghosts cover version.

We are extremely pleased to introduce today's guest, who definitely needs no introduction.

Depending on how your mind is fixed, you may process Second Storey's unique brand of electronic music as a physical, energetic kind of rave music, or you could find yourself postulating on the dense intricacies that his sonic life-forms contain. Such is the dualistic nature of the Berlin based producer. Second Storey, the life’s work of Alec Storey, was born out of the vibrant free-party scene of Norfolk (also the launch pad for the infamous Bloc Weekender), and those roots in bass-heavy techno reverberate throughout his tracks, but this isn’t simple soundsystem fodder. If there was one defining quality to Al’s craft, it would be funk; the kind of crazed, psychedelic, booty-shaking gospel as laid down by Parliament in the ‘70s. The same sound that re-manifested itself throughout the decades as the electro backbone of early hiphop in the ‘80s, the aquatic machinations of Drexciya in the ‘90s, and even on to the omni-limbed freakouts of Autechre et al. Al represents the next logical distillation of these principles, speaking his own dialect of hip-wiggling astral transcendence parallel with the contemporary bass music landscape in the dubstep aftermath, but never quite adhering to it.
The musical make-up of Second Storey, his collaborations with Appleblim, and the numerous projects fore and aft, continue to feed into a thrillingly singular body of work. Much like the energy that crackles around the man-machine when in a fit of drum pad bashing on stage, the alien transmissions that beam out of him are an irrepressible beast, boasting the kilojoules to land in all sorts of unpredictable places.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- There’s a new EP coming out on Ara-U’s label  “No Static Automatic’ later this year. I’ve also got some new collaborative projects on the way, alongside a bunch of solo stuff I’m in the final stages of finishing. 

What inspires you now to create music?

- Fear of Berlin crows at dawn.

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- I use a Laptop, Ableton Push, Elektron Syntakt, Elektron Machine Drum and Roland SPD-SX.

Second Storey showcases his love of and knack for crafting sci-fi electro-futurism on this escapist new 12". Known as one of the first artists on fabric's Houndstooth label, he has also made waves on electro powerhouses Trust, Mechatronica and Frustrated Funk and is a key resident at London's underground techno and electro hub, Natural Selection. Here, Storey fuses his deep-rooted love for electro with cutting-edge sound design across five intelligent, dynamic sound system tracks that redefine the genre with lashing synths that sound like sheet-metal whips and coruscated rhythms that make you move your body.

Premiere: Second Storey – Holografix (No Static / Automatic)

Second Storey is the artistic vessel of Alec Storey, a Berlin-based producer whose roots trace back to Norfolk’s free-party scene — the same fertile ground that gave rise to Bloc Weekender. Emerging first as Al Tourettes with early releases on [k]rack-troni[k], he went on to record for Apple Pips, Sneaker Social Club, Aus Music, and Schmorgasbord, while building a formidable creative partnership with Appleblim. Together, the duo remixed Planetary Assault Systems, Axel Boman, Underworld, and Raudive, before launching the ALSO project. Their live debut at Space Ibiza set the tone for a string of European performances and culminated in a full-length album on R&S Records.

Second Storey’s solo trajectory is no less ambitious. Commissioned for the soundtrack to Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, he later inaugurated his Second Storey alias with the Houndstooth-released debut album Double Divide. Preceding EPs on Nervous Horizon and Austria’s Trust laid the groundwork for his second LP, Lucid Locations, a cerebral distillation of his electro-techno-funk aesthetic. The subsequent remix collection, Lucid Interpretations, featured contributions from Nastia, Radioactive Man, The Exaltics, Machine Woman, and 214. His catalog has since expanded with releases on Clone’s Frustrated Funk, Varvet, Natural Selection, Pudel Produkt, Mechatronica, and most recently, No Static Automatic.

Stylistically, Second Storey’s compass is guided by funk’s psychedelic backbone, channeled through electro, techno, IDM, UK bass, and other rhythmic mutations. Whether collaborating, remixing, or commanding the stage with live drum pad intensity, his output remains singular: elastic, unpredictable, and bursting with energy.
