It's hard to believe it's been over a year since the last secondnature party in Seattle. It feels simultaneously as if it's been many years, and no time at all. Lost in the fog of pandemic timelessness, it's easy to forget that it was once normal for us to commune in sweaty togetherness in dark basements and fogged out nightclubs. 

The second volume of our secondnature & friends series brings together contributions from some of our close friends and collaborators who we weren't able to host on the first go around. We've shared dance floors and DJ booths with all of them, and if we can't be together IRL, we're happy we can at least be together URL. This compilation is a statement of intent that we will see and share space with each other, and with all of you, again soon. Stay safe and healthy!

secondnature & friends Vol. 2 [SNVA02]

We're beyond thrilled to welcome Seattle-based producer, DJ, and cofounder of the fantastic Apt E record label and party series, Cameron Kelley, aka tondiue to secondnature.

As a spatial designer and bird watching hobbyist, they have a keen eye and ear for the meaningful details found within the natural world. This is expressed through their productions as well as DJ sets; often opting for the slow burning and meditative pace of percussive new age and textural ambient music, while bringing earthen timbres and frenetic rhythm to the dance floor.

In addition to their explorations as tondiue, they make up one half of the DJ duo, party series, and record label Apt E alongside their longtime collaborator Max. Apt E has been making waves in the Seattle underground since 2017, starting with a series of all nighters at off-the-beaten-path locations around the city and later developing into a record label. Their vinyl releases focus on acts from in and around the Seattle area, and seek to provide a platform for up and coming artists. Look out for a handful of releases from tondiue in 2021, including an Apt E record from their newly formed krautrock band, Tape.

After three years of organizing parties and bringing world-class artists to Seattle, secondnature is proud to announce its new label with the release of Fugal’s Oil Panes EP.

The debut release from the Berlin-based secondnature resident features four original tracks of ambitious, experimental techno along with a remix by Semantica Records founder Svreca.

Oil Panes marks Fugal’s unique approach to techno that challenges preconceived notions of convention, structure, and temporality. The tracks collectively construct a cohesive narrative that evokes a mental headspace of its very own.

The record will be available on September 5 at many fine vinyl retailers worldwide, courtesy of ReadyMade Distribution.

Oil Panes

Fugal - Oil Panes [SN001]

The second release from Seattle-based collective secondnature comes from Simic with the "Discussion of Interests" EP. Three tracks of psychedelic and effective electronic music that falls somewhere between house and techno, along with a remix from Slow Life lead producer S. Moreira. Discussion of Interests is another marker in the development of secondnature’s musical realm, expanding it from the dark and cerebral techno of Fugal’s “Oil Panes” EP to one that includes more groove-laden tracks with expressive melodic content. The third release from Seattle-based collective secondnature comes from Archivist, with the Star In A Circle EP: Four introspective tracks that take you on a journey through Archivist’s strong mood persona in the form of intricate, subtle musical landscapes and undertones. Archivist explores the power of anxiety, loneliness and melancholia to compel movement, delving into the tension between internal struggle and dance floor liberation.

Our resident Fugal returns to secondnature with his Parallels EP: four versatile tracks of powerful rhythms and diverse moods. 

The Korean-American artist from Seattle picks up from the austere, dense, textural themes of his debut EP “Oil Panes” and expands them into colorful, adventurous territory.

Parallels EP will be available on February 19 2018 at fine vinyl retailers worldwide via Ready Made Distribution. Digital files are available for purchase on the secondnature Bandcamp.

Parallels

Fugal - Parallels [SN004]

Aos’ boundless love for music is apparent in everything she does. As a producer, a DJ, and an event organizer with Seattle’s secondnature and TUF collectives, Kayla Waldorf’s vision eschews traditional categories and genre boxes in favor of an ecstatic spontaneity. Her DJ sets are well known for their playful energy and narrative threading between many different styles. Violent Light is Aos’ first offering on secondnature’s own label, and it captures this playful essence. 

The title track’s stomping groove (complete with rave whistle) sets the tone, while Lullaby and What/Why move into headier territory composed of dusty synths stabs and clouds of vocal effects. Finally, secondnature’s own Fugal delivers a remix that flips What/Why into a rolling depth charge.

They are embers, conjuring the warm afterglow of rave memories that we are holding close in these strange times of isolation. Music connects us across time and space, rooting us in the past while pointing to the future. We all have to go our own ways for now, but the spirit of the rave endures.
