‘Tout Le Monde Et Personne’. He blames ‘Everybody and No one’.

Clearly, Bintogoma Traore was not trying to get rich, or entertain: he wanted to change the world. And all it took to get there was 4 cassettes, all recorded between 1994 et 1998. In that time he went from extreme poverty, sellings eggs in the streets and killing pigs at the factory, to being the biggest pop star in his native country, Burkina Faso, and a legend all over Western Africa.

Corruption, ill governance, education, colonisation… All his songs were history and philosophical lessons for the ghetto youths, the unemployed, and the many people who could identify themselves with him.

He died 20 years ago, mortally wounded after going through a car crash. Today, his videos still ranks millions of views on social network. No one has forgotten him. And his fight is more relevant than ever.

Rub-A-Dub is the name of a music genre born in Jamaica in the early Eighties. Between 1979 and 1985 more or less, a bunch of producers (Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes, Linval Thompson etc.), Sound engineers (Scientist), live musicians (the Roots Radics),  singers (Barrington Levy, Yellowman, Don Carlos, Toyan, Billy Boyo etc.)   and sound systems (Volcano etc.) nicked a new tradi-modern aesthetic, made equally of organic sounds, real instruments  live playing, the first electronic sounds (drum pads and synth), rough singing and toasting (the Jamaican slang for rap). 
Of course, in ‘Rub-A-Dub’ was also ‘Dub’:  a smoke-heavy trippy vibe that would push the pioneers work (Lee Perry, King Tubby etc. ) even further into space. The ethos was simple: heavy bass, heavy drums, a minimal approach that would bring enough room for singers to push their toasting to the next level.  
It is widely considered as the bridge between Roots Reggae and modern Dancehall music. Its influence on rap and modern electronic music can’t be overstated. 
In 1985, a new riddim called Sleng Teng put a stop to Rub-A-Dub by revolutionizing the whole Jamaican music game, with a simple Casio Keyboard riff. The digital era had started. Machines were on. The original Rub-A-Dub style might not have lasted long, but those records, made by sound systems for sound systems, still kick harder than a motherfucker.

An incredible video has been doing the rounds lately, showcasing a musician from Malawi jamming on a crazy home made one string guitar by a beautiful lake. 

The video has reached hundreds of thousand views and several mainstream media like the Huffington Post have been jumping on it.

A few years ago I took the liberty to rework his track with the help of music producer and singer Séverin from France. The original track was recorded pretty badly, and it felt the mix and the kick drums needed a little more bump to it.

‘Ma 6t Va Cracker’ came out in 1997 in France. Just like cult movie ‘La Haine’ three years before, it showed the world the tragic situation of french ghettos and its soundtrack contributed to showcase a generation of kids who would create the golden age of French rap. Twenty years later, the situation of french suburbs is still highly critical.  Big up Tiwony for recording a special version of his ‘Pas de Timinik’ classic tune for us,  and big up the Blues Party sound for making it happen.

Lewoz - Di Mwen A Pa Vre (Secousse Edit)

Not much to say about this one, no idea who the artist is, nothing on the internets... He's from Haiti I think.  Bought the record from the excellent Invisible City recordshop guys, who found stock copies in a warehouse in Trinidad i think. It wasn't cheap, but the tune is an absolute monster of a track, somewhere between zouk kompa disco and psych... After a millionth listen it's still growing in me. Whovever you are, massive props to you Erick Paul.

Roxane - Tou Sel (Secousse edit)

Guadeloupe, 1986. The football World Cup has all the islanders' eyes riveted to their TV sets. At every half time breaks, local TV channel RFO broadcasts a music video on repeat: ‘’Tou’t Jo Pa’ Min’m". Max Rambhojan, the local singer responsible for this monster tune, has arrived. 



In the video, he effortlessly sings and kickstarts a joyous street party with his band, Show Man, his dancers, kids, friends, family  and what seems like the whole neighbourhood. The song will gain cult status from then on, cementing the power of the 'Zouk Chiré' sound, a high tempo version of Zouk highly influenced by Guadeloupe's Carnival mass drum bands. Max self-releases his first solo album on vinyl in 1985, enrolling some of the best musicians the scene has to offer : his band leader King Klero, Guy Jacquet of les Vikings de la Guadeloupe fame on production duties, Ramon Pyrmée on synths, Claude Vamur, Meliza… 



In 1992 a new solo album follows. By then the artists have familiarized themselves with computers and the sound has gone full-on digital. In that album Max records an updated version of his ’Tou’t Jo Pa’ Min’m’ anthem to great effect. 



Reducing Max Rambhojan to a zouk artist would be a mistake. He’s first and foremost a master of Gwo-Ka, a musical practice born during the transatlantic slave trade and performed by all ethnic and religious groups of Guadeloupe. Gwo Ka allowed slaves to communicate, cope with their situation, mock the colonizers and maintain a cultural link with their African origins. It has never ceased to exist and has become a major part of the Island folk music culture. Max Rambhojan was schooled as a kid by Gwo-Ka pioneer Guy Conquette, and quickly joined the backing band of another legend, Ti-Sélès. That sound is the root of his particular style, especially vibrant on two tracks in his repertoire: ‘Cecilia’ and ‘Kouté Nouvel’, both featured on this release's b-side. A touch of Spiritual Jazz is also palpable, allowing a magical vibe to spread, giving birth to some of the deepest music from this era. 



In 2019, Max still performs Gwo-Ka every week-end in Guadeloupe and also hosts a show on local radio Media Tropical, 88.1FM.
