The Hydra Suites shall comprise, when complete, 10 works—a Decade—inspired by the paint of the Greek master Tetsis.

The Sunset Pentad (Hydra Sunset i–v) explores fading light, growing darkness, and rest; whereas the Sunrise Pentad (Hydra Sunrise i–v) concerns dawn, light, and awakening.

When the tenth and final piece is complete, the work shall become simply 'The Hydra Decade': two pentads, one hewn from darkness, the other from light. As a chiastic structure (a mirror image), the first part of the Sunrise Pentad answers the questions arising from the final part of the Sunset Pentad.

The first light portrayed in this piece is only a prelude to the Decade's true zenith, marked by the final, powerful, and complete rising of the sun.

Sunrise: Symphonic Mass for Choir and String Orchestra was commissioned in 2007 by the combined Majorstua and Nova chamber choirs in Oslo, Norway, where its premiere took place. We are delighted to bring the first presentation of Sunrise Mass to the West Coast today.

Gjeilo approaches his craft from a spiritual perspective, and wants to share universal human experiences in the realm of his music. The text comes from the Ordinary of the Mass, and Gjeilo has provided a secondary title to each: Kyrie - The Spheres, Gloria - Sunrise, Credo - The City, and Sanctus & Agnus Dei - Identity & The Ground.

While Gjeilo sets the meaning of the Latin text respectfully and observes the traditions that masses exhibit, his overall vision for the piece lies within the subtitles of the work. In so doing, he reveals a structure outside of the text: a journey from the heavens to Earth. The intent and the story in his Mass are expressed through the way in which the music comes across sonically.
