Born in Kent on the outskirts of London, Half Mauritian half Moroccan, raised to music from both Morocco and Mauritius, Mehdi El-Aquil is an immaculate DJ and Selector who has witnessed the pivoting of musical currents over the past decades. Heavily inspired by Jazz-funk, Hip-hop, Electro Boogie, Afro-beat, Soul, and House music, Mehdi has been honing his craft since the early 80s. As a DJ he has transitioned from playing in Ibiza to making regular appearances in London during the mid-90s, followed up by a steady relocation to Australia back in 2004.
Firm lover of music on Vinyl as a medium with a continuously rising interest in electronics and studio gear, Mehdi has gathered solid knowledge and expertise over the years, which has led to the creation of his own equipment line 10 years ago, Condesa Electronics, a globally renowned series of high-end mixers, hand-made in South Australia.

Mehdi's DJ style is free-floating, eclectic, and lively, with a penchant for positive vibes fully summarizing the essence of DJing.

Brian (DJ Python) and I run a Sunday party called Pause, and here’s a section of a live recording from our third edition.

Brian got stuck in New York, which meant I had to hold it down for about 6-7 hours. I’d barely slept—maybe an hour since Friday—thanks to what could be excused as work commitments and some friends deciding to get married in the middle of it all.

Honestly, I barely remember playing, just that I showed up without headphones or a working USB. Shout out to Blake from the Ormside Bar team, who lent me his headphones and held down the first 30 minutes while I copied some random folders onto a spare stick of his.

The mix is a bit loose given my delirium but meant I was trying shit like leaving Chicago drum tracks rolling under other blends or attempting to double drop minimal tunes (god only knows why)."

"Building this mix with recent dancefloors and memorable dancers in mind. The result is a a condensed representation of a peak time set you might find me play recently. Full of new and old records i've been enjoying recently in clubs and festivals. 

It starts with a 40 mins build up of rolling, rhythmic and consistent early 00s tech house tracks, leading up into an intentional 30 minute final flurry of good feeling inducing 90s ravey lifters. I'm really happy how it turned out, and maybe some of these records slip into my set at Multi Multi."

I was hoping to create a mix that showcased my love of early 00s progressive house, incorporating both old records and new fresh material that capture the nostalgia of the golden era. Packed to the brim with unreleased and forthcoming material from my extremely talented friends. Proper peak time mix but can fit any setting I’m sure 😉 Enjoy x

This mix is especially dear to my heart - a love letter to some of my all-time favourite records. Threaded throughout is a consistent theme of soulful female vocals that bring warmth and emotion to the journey. Expect a strong presence of ’90s house and garage influences, with plenty of summer-tinged “hands-in-the-air” moments, punchy piano lines, and deep, chunky house grooves. It’s a feel-good blend designed for open skies, sun-kissed dancefloors, and pure joy.

Secretsundaze is the trademark of forward-thinking, underground house music. As an artist and brand – spanning parties and festivals, a record label, a studio, an NTS residency and a live band project – it’s been operating for over 20 years and embodies the spirit and community of London’s club culture. But it’s never been one to sit still or rest on its laurels; leave that to the nostalgia crew because Secretsundaze always keeps it moving. 

Take this year, 2024, as an example. Right now Secretsundaze is stepping out as an artist proposition in its own right, helmed by producer/DJ/curator James Priestley who’s currently packing a stack of club tracks that will drop across the year and establish the project as a hit factory for DJs and dancers searching for a fresh take on house music that draws on breakbeat energy and trancey euphoria. Priestley is known to take the roof off as a DJ and now he’s adding to his arsenal with sought-after solo productions of his own under the Secretsundaze name. 

As a tastemaker, Secretsundaze sits at the cutting-edge, bringing new heads into the fold and always looking to champion new talent. His NTS residency, which has seen MoMa Ready, Paquita Gordon and Alex Kassian guest recently, is a reflection of the project’s current dancefloor obsessions. The meticulous curation of the Secretsundaze presents parties and Multi Multi festival, renowned for featuring talents such as Ash Lauryn and Carista long before they gained widespread recognition and uniting visionary artists like Toumba, Tash LC and NIKS under a single roof, serves as a compelling testament to Secretsundaze’s commitment in celebrating new artists.

Now for some history: 2022 saw the launch of Spirit Of Sundaze Ensemble, a full live band project that reimagines anthems beloved of those in the know, recording and performing cult bangers like Photek’s ‘Mine To Give’ and Joyce Sims’ ‘Come Into My Life’. The band has already graced the stages of the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre) and the ICA as well as Beat Hotel and Kala festivals, with a debut LP set for release later this year.

This duality of cutting-edge and classic is what makes Secretsundaze so special. Priestley originally cut his teeth as a d’n’b DJ and a promoter of not-so-legal warehouse parties before becoming an annual resident at the legendary Robert Johnson and landing gigs at Panorama Bar and Queen at Smart Bar, which is the kind of gigography that many selectors would happily settle for. But Priestley’s love of underground club culture has propelled him even further and Secretsundaze is now two decades deep, a pillar of London culture that has poured blood, sweat and tears into the city’s music community. 

Secretsundaze begins 2024 as a solo venture with Priestley at the helm, navigating an ever-expanding musical universe that unearths and re-engages with different styles, genres and music scene via parties, live shows, productions, radio and even a new record label.
