Drumtrip Radio #020 - DJ Jamie [19/11/14]

As we kick off our new platform for sharing DJ Mixes that we have booked or have playing for us for future events. 
We thought we would begin proceedings with a Back2Back with one of our own, Lukey B, alongside Dan PRKN.

"Lukey B" has been part of the D&B scene for around 25 years and has become integral piece of the furniture in the scene we love in Newcastle. 
Having been resident DJ for Grenade, Dilate, Motion Sickness and Curves to mention a few, Lukey B knows his way around a set of decks. 
"PRKN" is an up and coming young DJ with a very bright future ahead of him. He's frequently played sets on Method Radio for the Newcastle Beats Show (formally Hit The Breaks) and has been resident DJ for both Big Fat Rave & Lively Up. We look forward to having him play for us at our next event on the 19 July 2025.

PRKN x Lukey B - Curves Promo

A deep dive into the early releases on the Back 2 Basics sub label that ran from 1994 to 2000, releasing music from Ascend, Ultravibe, Technical Itch, JB and more. At first glance the label could be considered 90s record box filler but I love how the label could hop from atmospheric jungle to vocals to big wobbly basslines and amens to hip hop jump up and darkness. DJ Junk started djing in 1988 with Hip-Hop & Electro, mostly for his breakers to practice to and progressed onto hardcore by 1991, selling tapes known as "Junk Hardcore" through shops & outside raves. By 1992, he was desperate to make his own music and convinced Rodger from local rave outfit Tone Def to use his studio. The tracks were played by all of the big names, including on Radio by Slipmatt. Junk went on to release a total of 12 Hardcore/Jungle 12"s, as well as releasing some house/hard house tunes under the name of Blister Sisters. I've taken almost all of the tracks from the Junk releases 92-95, as well as some previously unreleased tracks. The unreleased tracks are currently available or soon to be available on Spandangle Selection....

DJ Junk 92-95 History Mix

After my last label mix (Kartoons) I thought it best for my next mix to pay homage to my all time favourite drum & bass producers, two artists who I have stalked on Discogs in a kind of worrying fashion over the last few years, trying to pick up obscure remixes and forgotten bits of vinyl. Aphrodite has carried his style well over the years and since the early days of jump up his production has been duplicated, copied, ripped off by many - some have succeeded in manipulating that trademark bass, others have blatantly done a poor job. I don't think that drum & bass would have been what it was in the mid 90's without contribution from both Micky Finn & Aphrodite, nearly every set in '95 and '96 featured heavily with tracks from Urban Takeover and other sub labels. I think for me, the clever use of hip hop samples, straight kicks and snares along with the original wobble bass seems to be a winning formula.

It really hit home when Stalker was featured in Human Traffic in 1999, the same year Aphrodite released his self titled album - this was a time when, for me, the direction of drum & bass seemed uncertain. A time when new genres were popping up all over the place, most of my close DJ friends had moved over to the likes of UK garage or the deeper aspects of drum & bass.

Aphrodite obviously still plays all over the world, his sets these days still seem to feature the same spark his production did all those years ago, he seems to have moved on though bassline wise with his own production - not really something I am that keen on. That's just a person thing though although I guess he had to move on sometime.

So here's part one of some of my all time favourite releases by Micky Finn & Aphrodite, a collection spanning many years and many samples. All mixed on 2 Technics 1210's and a DJM700, nothing fancy but then I don't think this series needs it.

This was the era of Made 2 Fade mixers, Pro 150’s and cheap Soundlab strobes, it was also a fantastic time to be playing house, jungle, hardcore - anything that was still underground. For anyone involved in this fantastic era of UK music this is a chance to relive some of my favourite memories, exclusively put together for Drum Trip.
