Absent Minded Perfection is a track I produced with John Massey in Long Beach, California around 2004. Unlike a lot of our other music at the time, this one isn’t built on samples — we borrowed a friend’s Nord Lead and used John’s Roland Juno-60 to write out melodies, while I programmed the drums in Ableton.

The result is a more synth-driven, experimental cut that still carries that underground grit. Castor Pollux came in and absolutely barred out on the lyrics, delivering sharp verses over the layered keys and heavy drums. It’s one of those tracks that shows a different side of what we were building in the early days of Gutter Water Music.

If you’re into underground hip hop with live synths, 2000s experimental rap, and Long Beach indie hip hop history, this track delivers that unique sound.
