Washington, DC’s most prodigious live band, have built on the sound and success of their debut record to create a work that comes straight from the heart. As leaders of the Reggae-Soul Movement, they continue to expand their scope infusing the new album, “Knowledge Shine Bright” with elements of Funk, House, Dancehall, Hip-Hop, R&B and Rock. The record is marked by dazzling guest appear- ances by rappers Mr Lif & Flex Mathews and chanteuses Candice Mills & Edy Blu who bring muscle and soul to this collection of 12 songs. Intimate yet expansive, “Knowledge Shine Bright” is a 50 minute sonic journey that few contemporary bands have the fortitude to conjure.

Founded by brothers Arthur “Rootz” Steele and Archie “Zeebo” Steele, who have toured and performed for over 15 years as frontmen for the Thievery Corporation live band. See-I is comprised of Rob Myers on guitar, Ashish Vyas on bass, Jeff Franca on drums, Frank Mitchell on saxophone and Salem Steele on keyboards, all of whom live within the 10 x 10 mile square known as Babylon, er… the Nation’s Capital. From humble beginnings in North Carolina, the Steele Brothers got their start singing in the church choir and were soon transfixed by the funk, soul and rock sounds they heard on the radio in the 1970s. Decades of musical depth and experience are the secret weapons they bring to the table, both live and in the studio.

“Knowledge Shine Bright” opens with “Never Give Up,” a deeply-moving Reggae tune, written while on tour by Rootz and Zeebo memorializing their mother who passed at the time. Although a Reggae groove infuses all of the album there are many notable musical departures. “The Chase” finds Rootz singing over a House beat fused to Afropop guitars, “Rudeboy Razor” melds Rock and Hip Hop, “Musical Murder” slithers from Dancehall to World Beat, ending in a sitar-drenched outro courtesy of Rob Myers (Thievery Corpo- ration’s “Lebanese Blonde”), “Queen of Sheba” and “Revolution” find the band getting in touch with their feminine side with vocalists Edy Blu and Candice Mills burying their sexy and profound lyrics deep into the groove, and on “The Boogieman” the inimitable Mr Lif finds his flow to be the perfect match for the track’s quirky, P-Funk pseudo-political jibber-jabber. And the title track? Well, you’ll just have to hear for yourself how a contemporary band can bring so much old school wisdom and soul to light.

See-I released their 2014 album “Knowledge Shine Bright” to great reviews in the press and an amazing radio campaign, followed up with national tour dates including the 30th annual Reggae On The River Festival in Humboldt County, CA.  The tracks from this album have been sent out to some of the best remixers around the world and the results are just stunning.  

The Knowledge Shine Bright remixes will be released in a series of EPs and the first one is engineered to blow up dance floors all over the place.  See-I’s track The Boogieman features rapper Mr. Lif, and the Basement Freaks have stripped it down and reworked the tune from the bottom up.  The result is an electro infused bass funk banger, a slice of futuristic funky hip-hop, which is a DJs dream.  Fort Knox Recordings label mate Qdup remixed King of the Road adding some future go-go swing to create a funky glitch-hop anthem.  These are the first See-I remixes by both of these accomplished artists, and instrumentals of both remixes are also available. 

The first installment of the Knowledge Shine Bright Remixes sets the bar very high, with Basement Freaks and Qdup reinterpreting the funky reggae and hip-hop of See-I into dance floor monsters.  With a range of sounds from electro, glitch-hop, funk, bass and breaks these remixes deliver the goods and create an irresistible party vibe.

Four upbeat party rocking tunes have been gathered for the second edition of See-I’s Knowledge Shine Bright Remixed EP.  See-I recently played great shows at the Funk Parade in DC and opening for Michael Franti & Spearhead.  This summer Rootz and Zee of See-I will be touring nationwide with Thievery Corporation, playing many large festivals and shows.   Just in time for summer time parties and playlists comes this new batch of remixes from their 2014 album Knowledge Shine Bright.

The Remix EP kicks off with Sammy Senior’s reinterpretation of Real Steel, turning it into a bubbling dancehall tune with some heavy bass.  Sammy Senior is a globetrotting funk DJ and brings his experience to bear on this remix, guaranteed to get the party started.  Thunderball have dusted off their drum’n’bass kit to create a rolling Never Give Up remix for the junglist massive.  Rootz and Zee’s uplifting vocals float perfectly over the booming basslines and crisp beats.  One of the biggest tracks on the original album, Queen of Sheba featuring Edy Blu gets a radical reworking by Lack Jemmon from Budapest.  The result is a heavy hitting glitch hop remix that works the listener up into a frenzy before dropping the beat for Edy’s vocals and a very funky breakdown.      Always looking to showcase fresh new sounds and talent, Fort Knox Recordings has tapped Victoria, BC’s own Palletz to remix Rudeboy Razor featuring Flex Mathews.  The relentless basslines combine with electro, trap and moombahton elements smoothly, with Flex’s rhymes on top.

The second installment of the Knowledge Shine Bright Remixes is a full of high-energy tunes for the dance floor, and See-I could not be more thrilled. For the third and final installment of the Knowledge Shine Bright Remixed series, See-I has assembled producers from afar and hometown locals, old friends and new collaborators alike.  This summer has been busy with See-I releasing several EPs and playing many shows.  Looking ahead to the fall See-I will get back on the road to tour in support of the upcoming Knowledge Shine Bright Remixed album. See-I live performances are better than ever, with new material and unstoppable energy, a show crafted at the soon to be 10 year running Rockers International Wednesday night party in Washington, DC.
 
Remix EP 3 starts with an upbeat reworking of Musical Murder by hometown label mates Empresarios, who have stripped the track down, added percussion and then flex through a few styles, changing from house and dub to reggae throughout.  A fun and creative remix which creates a sunny tropical vibe and uses Rob Myers’ original sitar parts smoothly.  Two different remixes of The Chase are included, the first by Washington, DC’s own worldbeat party rockers, the Sol Power All-Stars.   Their remix of The Chase slightly pitches up the tempo, creating a sizzling Afrobeat-infused house tune.  Portland, Oregon’s own AfroQBen is a good friend of the Fort Knox family and also remixed The Chase.  The AfroQBen remix is a deep dub reinterpretation that takes the listener on a cosmic chase through the atmosphere, smooth downtempo perfect for a late morning chill-out session.  Fort Knox Recordings regular Omegaman from Sydney, Australia took on Revolution featuring vocals by Candice Mills and has created an instant classic.  Omegaman has added spacey guitars, reverb and dub echoes, which spread out allowing Candice’s ethereal vocals to float down effortlessly, an epic tune of revolution.
 
All of the Knowledge Shine Bright Remixes have been different, and this third edition brings the party to the after hours and next morning. See-I is thrilled to be working with some of the best producers around the world and are proud of these remixes. Instrumentals of each remix are available and with a range of sounds from house, dub and reggae to downtempo these remixes are a must have for DJs and music lovers alike.

International Velvet is the solo side project of Rob Myers, guitar and sitar player for Fort Knox Five, Thunderball, See-I and Thievery Corporation. International Velvet’s track Sitargazer, the psychedelic breakbeat anthem, was well received and played worldwide. Germany’s own downtempo legends Mo’ Horizons have reworked the track into a balkan drum’n’bass monster. Taking the original sitar lines and adding funky polka on top of a stepping drum’n’bass beat takes Sitargazer into unexpected territory. The roots reggae band See-I features six members of Thievery Corporation and is hometown Washington, DC sensation with their weekly Wednesday night party at the Eighteenth Street Lounge. Their reggae-rock tune Homegrown has become the anthem of Wednesday nights and is well known by the See-I faithful. Two Canadian producers each turn in their own unique remixes of this great track. Stickybuds from Kelowna, BC has been busy releasing tunes on Goodgroove Records went a different route with his electro-funk remix that chops up the vocals and funks up the tune big time. Toronto’s own Dubmatix kept Rob Myers’ rocking guitar lines and Rootz and Zee’s vocals, but turned the song into a drum’n’bass creeper.

With sounds ranging from drum’n’bass to electro, downtempo, and some serious funk & soul thrown in, The New Gold Standard 2 Remixed EP 3 raises the bar once again, showcasing all the talented artists on Fort Knox Recordings.
