‘Computer Rock’ rides a tough break slow and hard and injects dystopian electro synth licks into the mix for a darkside roller that celebrates the visionary talent of Jeff Brown, aka Kase 2. Brown pioneered graffiti in the 70s with futuristic styles that still hold sway today, leaning into his own sci-fi imaginings about computer worlds inhabited by extra-terrestrial beings, Brown passed away in 2011, and this track and the attendant B2 cut ‘Kase - Reprise’ pay tribute to a forefather of hip-hop culture by channeling the future shock styles of Bambaataa et al without ever sounding throwback.

[Premiere] La Dame - Kinnara (out on Defrostatica)

London producer VERE arrives on excess with his debut project Perpetual Motion - a punchy four tracker focussed on all things percussive. 

Ominous opener ‘Trace’ demonstrates VERE’s use of space and bass perfectly, as an eerie sample summons punchy drums through haze and mist. ‘Not So’ features a 1-2 punch of thick bass and heavily accented percussion, a banger primed for dancefloors with enough resolve in the breakdown to stop and take a breath. 

Title track ‘Perpetual Motion’ cranks up the intensity with a barrage of percussion ricocheting around the high end while a futuristic gliding bassline holds down the low section. This contrast in sound carries through the track and Robin Wylie’s punchy mastering has us itching to hear this on a decent system. ‘Midnight Blue’ finishes the EP in similar style, building the ambience with perfect pacing until a cutting 4x4 drop provides a refreshing mode switch.

The EP reimagines dance tracks in a new light, breaking from standard forms and exploring leftfield sounds and arrangements. 

Big Trouble’s interpretation of ‘Chasing Dragons’ masterfully blends UK Garage (UKG) and Breaks, exploring new directions while maintaining a distinctive style. The band-passed bass line infuses the track with an acid-y edge, creating a captivating soundscape. Soft vocal hits evoke a dreamy mood, adding a sheen of ethereality that juxtaposes beautifully with the underlying rhythmic intensity.

Portway & Slinki's 'Move' builds on a Latin piano before turning into a monster percussion beat, only to change again on the second drop as a big synth releases the tension.

On 'Madder', the Danish duo Hone Sound skillfully weaves atmospheric pads into a perfectly rolling jungle breakbeat.

Juke Joint co-founder Team GB from Manchester flexes his production skills around the serious call to 'Jiggle Like Jello' on a jacked bass line.
