As mutual fans of each others work, both Shawn and Adrian always looked for a way to work with each other and after meeting in Adrian’s hometown of Austin in 2010 for SXSW they decided it was time to get to work once their respective schedules freed up. Inspired by ‘60s freaky psychedelic folk, rock, soul and all funky tidbits in-between and bands such as Los Angeles Negros, Federal Duck, US69 and El Chicano the duo set forth on their task to create “Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics Vol.2.”

A couple of months ago, we picked out our <a href="http://www.stampthewax.com/2013/08/05/top-five-fela-kuti-reworks/" target="_blank">Top Five Fela Kuti Reworks</a> to mark the 16th anniversary of his death. The overwhelming response was confirmation of the feeling that had compelled us to write the feature; that Fela's musical legacy still resonates strongly today. Another testament of this is Red, Hot & Fela, a new compilation marking the 75th anniversary of Fela's birth, containing 13 interpretations by ?uestlove, tUnE-yArDs, Spoek Mathambo, Nneka, Tony Allen and Chance The Rapper. Our standout, however, was an interpretation of 'Sorrow, Tears & Blood' by a selection of names who were initially a little less familiar: Grammy award-winning string ensemble Kronos Quartet and TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe.

Originaire de l’état de Bahia, Josyara est l’une des voix les plus envoûtantes de la nouvelle génération brésilienne. A 27 ans, elle est déjà l’auteure de 2 albums qui vont chercher leurs racines chez les grands de la musique brésilienne (Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia e Gilberto Gil) et le folklore de son sertão. Toujours en quête d’expériences musicales, elle signe ici, avec “Iara correnteza”, un single aux accents électroniques en compagnie du beatmaker français (basé à Lisbonne) iZem. 


Iara, c’est le prénom de sa grand-mère, mais aussi une figure mythologique. Iara la femme-sirène dont la beauté ensorcelle. Josyara se retrouve enchantée par cette voix qui l’appelle des tréfonds de l’océan et l’invite à s’aventurer dans ses eaux. Une ode à la nature et aux eaux du Rio São Francisco qui ont marqué la vie et l’horizon de la chanteuse et une réflexion mystique sur la vie. Troubles ou limpides, douces ou violentes, les eaux sont un hymne à la quête d’équilibre, une invitation à la contemplation, au laisser-aller, un écho aux ondulations de notre for intérieur. 


“Iara correnteza”, c’est enfin une rencontre avec le producteur voyageur iZem, un pont jeté entre le folklore brésilien de l’une et l’esthétique acoustico-électronique de l’autre. Une rencontre qui marque le lancement du nouveau label français Elis records ancré à Lisbonne, co-fondé, entre autres, par iZem lui-même et Lekin, co-fondateur de la webradio parisienne défricheuse Le Mellotron, et qui annonce de nouvelles connexions entre esthétiques acoustiques et électroniques.
