A deeply personal account of my love affair with techno/rave/hardcore/breakbeat music circa 1990-1994. 

The phrase came about from a mate who came over, saw all the flyers (for club nights I was too young to go to) stuck all over my bedroom walls, and called me a rave kid. Yeah, that's me.

Ruffneck Ting's 'Champion Ting' event* at Bristol Trinity Centre, 10/12/1994, was the first real jungle night I went to; that, and their subsequent 'Tequila Ting' event* at Lakota in Jan '95 really left their mark on me. I mean, "Selektor Bwoy". Man, it's impossible to put into words what the vibe was like then - jungle was just, SO jungle - so I've assembled four mixes to do the talking. Every tune here sparks memories like it was yesterday. Massive shout again to the @ruffneck-ting crew and to everyone that made these nights so awesome. Big love <3

I was recently reminded by my old pal Olly that once upon a time, I made him a 'Foul Play versus Omni Trio' mixtape. I had little recollection of this initially, as it was donkeys' years ago and would probably have been a one-off mix recorded while herbally ameliorated. I certainly don't recall running off a dub for myself; the original cassette, it seems, is long-lost. Forward a quarter of a century, and in my Selectabwoy 'career revival' (lol) I've never been particularly inclined towards making all-artist mixes, but something about this concept - and Olly's enthusiastic memories of it - grabbed my imagination. So I thought why not give it another shot; this time armed with a wider collection and a few additional releases under pseudonyms.

(Before I start on the main event, it's exactly six years to the day that I got up at 5am to assemble the first Eclectic (Jungle) Samples mix on my phone. Oddly, I was reminded of this while blearily looking at my phone after the neighbours' screaming effing kids woke me up at 5am. Anyway, 25/11/2016 was a Friday too so this feels like a special occasion to me, and I want to send a great big shout to my pal Olly for listening through the mix with me all those years ago. It's A Champion Ting (Part Three)

A little pre-Xmas treat: rewinding 29 years to the winter of 1994 for what will likely be the final Champion Ting mix. 

Been sat on this for a couple of months and must confess that I like it a lot; a mix of old faves and obscure stuff dug up from hazy memories, old tapes and full cycle shows. Minutiae of the construction include the ages spent fruitlessly searching for my Sweet Love and Stamina CD singles, before realising I had ripped them to mp3 years ago, presumably before binning them (idiot). Actually listening to the Red Light record for the first time in years instead of just using the intro (the same one DJ Hype rinsed) and just loving that Tracy Chapman sample. Realising I had somehow never heard Marv Cain's mindbogglingly catchy 'Believe It', sorely (albeit understandably) overlooked in favour of The Hitman. Yeah man, there's some great stuff on here, and it finishes up the best way I could muster with Peshay's masterpiece, The Piano Tune.

It's A Champion Ting (Part Four)

Final mix of the year is my take on the mighty Jungle Massive 4: Jungle Versus The Hardsteppers, the last instalment of the legendary series from Labello Blanco/PWL International ... big ups to scene legend Jimmy Low (aka Macka Brown/MC Kann) and the artical OJ himself, Pete Waterman...

Four years ago I did my own festive mix of Jungle Massive Volume 2 (https://on.soundcloud.com/kadto). Just four days after that I had the files set up to have a crack at Volume 4, but it's taken all this time to get my shit together sufficiently to tackle the 32 tracks on offer. I've had the official Gachet & Micky Finn mixtapes up for a while, so why bother? Well - for one, the mixes themselves aren't without their flaws ... but beyond that, I wanted to mash all the tunes up together in a continuous mix, rather than observing the original hardstep/jungle split. I'm not sure it ever made sense to me really - I guess you can retrospectively substitute 'drum & bass' for 'hardstep' in the sense that there's more ragga/soundclash flavour in the junglist half, but nowadays this is splitting hairs. It's a jungle compilation pure and simple, and easily one of the best going. 

Man, there's some brilliant tunes on it. Plenty of specials: 'Slow Down', 'Back To My Roots', '9mm' and 'Theme From Daddy Armshouse' stand out, all absolutely wicked and genuinely exclusive to the LP. (It just occurred to me that - unless you know otherwise - Nookie's effort is the earliest example of swingbeat/clownstep, a slice of pure class built around the b-line from Aaron Neville's 'Hercules'). Add to that a shit-ton of excellent VIPs including the superb Sky (DJ Kane VIP) from Just Jungle, Monk's Nu Jack City, Marv Cain's Gunman, Aphrodite's Bomber and MTS's Baad Boy Sound. Beyond that, the 'regular' tunes in there hold several of my all-time faves among their number - Steppaz Anthem! Vintage Wash! Roll On, Crisis, Legalise, The Dreamer ...and then Final Chapta and Babylon Trace Part 2... Labello weren't messing around, this is a filler-free zone. The selection also forced me into doing the Arsonist/Fire mash-up I've been daydreaming about for years, keep an ear out for that one :)

It's A Champion Ting (Part Five)

I've been wanting to dedicate some time and effort to the earlier 94-95 atmospheric/'intelligent' (*gags*) jungle/d&b era for ages, but just couldn't get the angle quite right. Like many of you I'm sure, Bukem's '95 Essential Mix has always been my main point of reference for that era, and I've found it tough to compile setlists that aren't just a straight rehash of similar material. Blue Note Origins, for me, implies enough of an overlap with the Speed vibe to be the perfect badge for what I wanted to do here. First of four mixes (so far). I know you gonna dig this!

In case you didn't make it to the end of Eclectic Mix Part IV, here's the closing set-piece, a reconstruction of a Good Looking classic. This one almost didn't make the cut until I discovered the Dog Star Man sample - then it was a done deal. I had planned to pitch this up to 150-155 but actually preferred it at the original amen tempo of 135, which tied in the techno elements nicely.

The Criminal Minds 'Re/Baptised By Dub' (Selectabwoy Cut n' Paste Booty)

This one's personal. 
Humour me for an hour or so and take a journey back to the early 90s, where my future love of jungle/D&B began. Before I had the courage and financial means to venture into indie record shops, I was seeking out breakbeat rave gems nestling on commercial dance compilations like Deep Heat and Thin Ice, watching toytown rave (doubtless resentfully) aired on TOTP, loving hoover noises on Dance Energy, picking up bargain 7” and cassette singles in Woolworths, HMV and Rival, and taping early Kickin, XL and Rising High records off my schoolmates. Although I’ve brushed some of the cheesier stuff under the carpet, this is an authentic selection of some all-time favourite tunes from back then, and it was an absolute joy to put together. Last track honours go to Acen's 'Close Your Eyes', the first track that had me shelling out the full £3.99 for the 12", included in its entirety for the wonderful final breakdown. 

Importantly, this mix reminded me of the time I had a compilation tape made for me by Lez, my Dad’s band manager, who understood precisely the kind of noisy futuristic music I was bang into. I must have been around 15. Opening with Baby Ford’s ‘Fetish’, it was the first place I heard Beltram’s ‘Energy Flash’, Spectrum’s ‘Brazil’, Techno Grooves ‘Christ!!!’ plus a load of other great Euro Techno. Damn, that mixtape has a lot to answer for, it was pure gold. RIP Lez, and Dad - this mix is for you.

EZ all. Had a break from mixing for a month or so, thought I'd pop back with the first volume of a new series I've been planning for a while. In a similar vein to the Evolution of Hardcore series, this is my tribute to the Metalheadz Blue Note era... kicking off with an hour of heavyweight 96-97 business.
Original plan was to mix these live, but I don't have either the patience or spare time to achieve the desired result, so once again these wonderful tunes are cut up and sequenced for maximum rollout.
Sending this out to the one like @the-roadblock, I know you've been waiting for this mate. Gonna tap you for more suggestions soon!

Compiling tracks for the 4th in my Rave Kid series got me thinking about what separates these from the beardier Evolution of Hardcore proto-D&B mixes, and as I scanned over a handful of my fave Sy and Slipmatt tapes from '93 the answer was crystal clear: great big huge blatant samples, rave riffs, breakbeats with stomping kickdrums, acid lines and the odd chipmunk. Mixed it up with a bit of darkside/jungle techno of course, but it's the cheerfully stomping exuberance of Wishdokta et al that's central to the vibe here. Anyway, I shan't dissect this too much, just pop it on nice and loud and enjoy the weekend yeah? L8rzzzz X

Randall/MC Fats: Dreamscape Volume 1 Extra Sensory Perception (CD3, 1997)

The tribute to DJ Spinbad continues with perhaps his most famous work. It's reportedly the most bootlegged mix of all time, so thought I might as well hop on board :D 

Spinbad's 1995 mixtape Rock The Casbah is frequently cited as THE defining moment in modern megamix/mash up culture, and with good reason. Featuring JS-One and A.Vee, according to the man himself this tribute to 80s pop was assembled on a 3-track (... a 4-track with a broken channel), and is simply put a technically brilliant, phenomenally imaginative and daring piece of mixtape history. To quote DJ Yoda's recent tribute, "Spinbad is one of the main reasons that I am a DJ. [He] was the first hip-hop mixtape DJ to leave the comfort zone of rap music. He showed me that music isn't something you need to be embarrassed about". 

To the mix then. I've only ever had a shortened version, but digging around there are a few variants commonly available, so this is a composite of the best quality remastered version I could find - blip-free, balanced and with the missing end stitched back in. I may revisit once I get a higher quality version of the post-Maneater section, but for now this will do just fine.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
