Thought I should get this nostalgiafest underway before the weather packs in for the year! 
After 18 months of intense mix pressure I've been close to burnout in the past few weeks, but I can always muster some enthusiam for the golden days of jungle. This series picks up where 'Back To Brighton Street' left off - a selection and vibe hovering around the summer of 1995, although not strictly constrained by date ... humour me and imagine that I had the '96 tunes on dub. @kolanut I'm looking at you mate. 

Being true to my roots and and those of my mans @wiseguisedjs and @rough-culture, part one has a slight Bristolian tint to the proceedings. As always, reposts, comments and track suggestions for future mixes are more than welcome. What are your ultimate '95 gems?

It's Ya Birthday Mix (Part 2)

Penultimate mix of the year is this seminal early '95 compilation curated by the mighty DJ Randall. A mixtape by the man himself apparently does exist, but I've never seen any trace of it, so once again I've made my own. Two more rather excellent jungle compilations for you. First up this little gem from Jumpin' and Pumpin's excellent Jungle Tekno series. It's the only one I own on vinyl, and I must have played Presha 3 off this a gazillion times alone (at least before I picked up the 12" second-hand). Each volume is pretty solid, but for me the balance of tunes on this one is just right - excellent atmospheric cuts from Skanna, 4 Horsemen, Sub Sequence and Doc Scott's Champion Sound remix (surely one of the best reinterpretations in jungle history?) balanced against the heavier IQ amen workouts. Couple of decent exclusives too. Love it.

It's exactly 30 years ago today that the Hughes brothers' hood classic Menace II Society hit US cinemas, and what better way to celebrate than with a retrospective mixtape. In a similar-ish vein to the recent GTA Radio Los Santos mix (https://on.soundcloud.com/tnQEMjC4ECVSZx8u9), here's the entire OST, cut up with remixes/bonus beats/acapellas and a stack of movie dialogue threaded throughout. It's possibly one of my favourite mixes I've ever done. Penultimate upload of the year (maybe). Doesn't seem hugely appropriate to post this on such a freezing bastard of a day, but it's next in the queue. I've had an enforced hiatus from mixing of late, for which I can only blame my employers, but hopefully this will make up for it.

Summer Of '95 (Part Four)

Final mix of the year is my take on the mighty Jungle Massive 4: Jungle Versus The Hardsteppers, the last instalment of the legendary series from Labello Blanco/PWL International ... big ups to scene legend Jimmy Low (aka Macka Brown/MC Kann) and the artical OJ himself, Pete Waterman...

Four years ago I did my own festive mix of Jungle Massive Volume 2 (https://on.soundcloud.com/kadto). Just four days after that I had the files set up to have a crack at Volume 4, but it's taken all this time to get my shit together sufficiently to tackle the 32 tracks on offer. I've had the official Gachet & Micky Finn mixtapes up for a while, so why bother? Well - for one, the mixes themselves aren't without their flaws ... but beyond that, I wanted to mash all the tunes up together in a continuous mix, rather than observing the original hardstep/jungle split. I'm not sure it ever made sense to me really - I guess you can retrospectively substitute 'drum & bass' for 'hardstep' in the sense that there's more ragga/soundclash flavour in the junglist half, but nowadays this is splitting hairs. It's a jungle compilation pure and simple, and easily one of the best going. 

Man, there's some brilliant tunes on it. Plenty of specials: 'Slow Down', 'Back To My Roots', '9mm' and 'Theme From Daddy Armshouse' stand out, all absolutely wicked and genuinely exclusive to the LP. (It just occurred to me that - unless you know otherwise - Nookie's effort is the earliest example of swingbeat/clownstep, a slice of pure class built around the b-line from Aaron Neville's 'Hercules'). Add to that a shit-ton of excellent VIPs including the superb Sky (DJ Kane VIP) from Just Jungle, Monk's Nu Jack City, Marv Cain's Gunman, Aphrodite's Bomber and MTS's Baad Boy Sound. Beyond that, the 'regular' tunes in there hold several of my all-time faves among their number - Steppaz Anthem! Vintage Wash! Roll On, Crisis, Legalise, The Dreamer ...and then Final Chapta and Babylon Trace Part 2... Labello weren't messing around, this is a filler-free zone. The selection also forced me into doing the Arsonist/Fire mash-up I've been daydreaming about for years, keep an ear out for that one :)

Digging In The Tapes

The festive season is here and I just hit 2 million plays, so it's a double celebration. Now if, like me, you think that nothing says Christmas like a bit of soul-crushingly dark techstep then I'm sure this festive offering won't disappoint. Indeed, this idea is one I've been sat on for a while; my mixing habits have definitely slowed this year but I really wanted to grind a decent one out before 2025. 

The mix rationale then. Caught up somewhere between my 500th listening of Trace & Ed Rush's legendary '97 One In The Jungle set, and the preceding year's Tech Steppin compilation, I found myself asking a simple question. What if the legendary (and it really is fucking legendary) 'No U-Turn Experience' mix had been made a year earlier? Blue Note Volume Nine

Hello. I've been drifting around that late '93/early '94 timeframe again, revisiting a few of the later Sublove tapes through to the Counterforce compilation, Ratty Edge tapes and so on, and figured this series was due a new entry. Representing an amazingly creative, pioneering era for breakbeat music, there's a nice balance of light and darkness in this selection (if I do say so myself). Artwork reboot required though, I couldn't face doing another label montage...

Internal's Counterforce LP from early 1994 is a lovely obscure compilation that I've rinsed many times, even made my own mix (refer to exhibit A: https://on.soundcloud.com/fgLsecS1vuf6SoNq7), and decided an alternate selection on a similar basis, i.e. early atmospheric jungle, would be jolly nice. Aquatic Jungle (Part Five)

First of the eclectic hardcore/jungle sample-spotter mix series.
It's a selection spanning multiple genres from the 60's to the 90's, the common thread being - as ever - that each track was sampled by the hardcore/rave/jungle/DnB scenes - some have just one signature sample, others have been rinsed. Some of these records are incredibly obscure, dug up with help from the RolldaBeats and WhoSampled camps - others are long-standing personal favourites of mine.
This time I've included a few cheeky set-pieces based around reconstructions of hardcore/jungle tracks, or at least paying tribute to them, so keep an eye out for D'Cruze's Bass Go Boom, 4 Hero's darkside classics Journey From The Light and The Element; a trio of Foul Play samples, a cut-up reconstruction of Leviticus' The Burial, a 115bpm tribute to DJ Hype's Tiger Style, and plenty more besides. I can assure you that no jungle records were harmed in the making of this mix, original sources only. And they are so good. As ever - hope you enjoy.

Eclectic Samples Mix Part I - 25/11/2016

A second journey into the more esoteric sample roots of breakbeat culture. Like the first mix it's an anything-goes, multi-genre mash-up with reconstructions, set-pieces and references to numerous hardcore, jungle and DnB tunes from back in the day. Had loads of fun sourcing the tracks and piecing them together; once again I've pushed the boundary of my own sanity during the construction, but hopefully it was worth it.

Found this little gem on pipomixes a few years back, no trace of it on Soundcloud, so I thought why not spread it around. This needs to be heard. The supremely talented DJ Shortkut of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz lays down an amazing mix of original tracks reconfigured into the hip-hop tracks that sampled them.

Eclectic Samples Mix Part IV - 07/05/2017

This mix is essentially Techno for the Junglist Sample-Spotters, but also a vague history of techno – from Kraftwerk, through Detroit and Acid house, into Sheffield Bleep and Euro Techno of the early 90s (the era I grew up with), with bits of ambient, house, rave and hardcore thrown in. Interspersed with plenty of random tracks, break loops and samples to enrich the experience, and loads of reconstructions and references to classic hardcore and jungle (SL2, The Untouchables, Nebula 2, DJ Mayhem, Peshay, Intense, D.O.P.E. and Nasty Habits among others).

In case you didn't make it to the end of Eclectic Mix Part IV, here's the closing set-piece, a reconstruction of a Good Looking classic. This one almost didn't make the cut until I discovered the Dog Star Man sample - then it was a done deal. I had planned to pitch this up to 150-155 but actually preferred it at the original amen tempo of 135, which tied in the techno elements nicely.

Ah, Jungle Renegades 2: an authentic selection of mid-1995 jungle/D&B curated by the one and only DJ Randall, representing a great cross-section of artists and labels of the time... just check that tracklist :) 

Following on from the superb Volume 1 LP (mix finally done... here https://soundcloud.com/selectabwoy/selectabwoys-jungle-renegades-1-mix) and the preceding Renegade Selector 1 & 2, the Jungle Renegades comps were 4LP pressings and louder than most; essential for fledgling junglists on a budget, and importantly the only place that mere mortals could find exclusive gems such as L Double & Liccle D's superb Rasta Sound and Ray Keith's reesed-up Sing Time VIP.

The Randall mixtape of Volume 2 is one of those elusive items that I can just about recall hearing; the internet has hardly any trace of it aside from the discogs listing. I'm sure I had a dub of Olly's cassette but it's one of a handful that I inexplicably lost years ago, so I've assembled my own from the CD flacs. Been on my to-do list for ages, hope I've done it justice.

LTJ Bukem - Ruffneck Ting 'Hot Ting!' (02/09/1994)

You know what they say about the 60s: “if you can remember it, you really weren’t there”… well maybe the same goes for the St Paul’s Carnivals of the mid 90s! Certainly neither Will or I can remember the exact set list that Roni Size played alongside MC Dynamite on Brighton Street one Saturday night in early July 1995. But through the haze of ganja smoke and the fog of time – we can safely say that the set left a lasting impression on both of us and it became something of a seminal reference point as we were setting out on our musical journey together as Smart & Cruise.

So coming full circle (or cycle) when Will asked me for ideas for the next Selectabwoy mix, I suggested this. He leapt at the idea and it occurred to us that it was exactly 25 years ago to the week! So it had to happen. During the course of last week, we agonised over the selection and Will worked on the mix in the hope that we could convey something of that moment and the special place that it holds for us. It's not intended as a replica of that set. It’s a tribute to it… and to a warm night in July 1995 when Jungle reached its peak.

It was loud and it was packed. Everyone looked good, the herb was pumpin’ and we were buzzing… Roni was on fire dropping tune after tune. Hype’s remix of ‘RIP’, Mental Power’s ‘Deep Soul’, Roni’s own ‘Buck Rogers’ and Rampage’s ‘Why?’ blasted through the speaker stacks. A carnival-ready mix of dancehall and R&B samples, heavy basslines and sound system effects captured the vibe perfectly. 

All the producers featured on this mix were on top of their game. Smashing out tunes that they knew would rip up the dance. Looking back, the music changed after that summer. The ragga and soul samples were to fade out, giving way to more hip hop flavours as Jungle evolved into Drum & Bass.

Some of the dubs never emerged much to our dismay… we still speak wistfully of Dillinja’s ‘Selassie Sound’ and Roni’s ‘All the Way’ – which we did manage to include in this mix courtesy of a cheeky radio rip! The rare Leviticus Remix of S.T. Files ‘Part 1’ also features. It feels very special to be able to bring this all together.

Big up Roni Size and Dynamite for inspiring us. Big up Selectabwoy for expertly mixing it up – it’s been great to work with you again my brother! And big up all the Bristol jungle heads and anyone who was there that night. We hope this mix brings back the memories.

Back To Brighton St. (A Tribute To Roni Size At St. Paul's Carnival 1995)

Been idly planning this one for a while. All credit to Greg @kolanut for the inspiration - after listening to his excellent space/illness themed mixes a while ago, I knew I was going to have to do an aquatic concept mix at some point. 

Why water? Like many other Pisceans, I don’t buy into the astrology bullshit whatsoever. However, there's something special about the overlap between music and water in nature that I love in both a literal sense - tracks that feature the sound of raindrops, waves crashing etc. - and as an abstract. Evidently I’m not the only one - the ‘floaty’ aesthetic of some of the more ambient side of D&B lends itself nicely to an aquatic theme. Granted, I’ve no idea whether tracks titled ‘River Of Dreams’ or ‘Mysteries Of The Deep’ would conjure up the same vibe under a different name, but it really doesn’t matter. Most of these tunes I’ve known for a long, long time – for me the titles are inextricably linked to the music and so form part of the narrative here.

Thinking about it, I’m not even sure why it took so long to get around to this mix, as planning and executing it was possibly more enjoyable than any other I’ve done. Working with a specific theme provides a nice excuse to bring together styles and producers that on the face of it might not seem an obvious match, the main task being to figure out some kind of continuity. It was also a great opportunity to trawl the internet for watery track titles and discover a handful of hitherto unknown pearls. Rest assured I’ve got plenty more set aside :)

Aquatic Jungle (Part One)

Onwards with the aquatic jungle and I've gotta tell you, this one is pretty special to me, so I've been sitting on it for a few weeks. I've had some incredible post-millennium tunes such as Aquatica and Dark Water in my shortlist since the inception of this series, so this marks my first foray out of the 90s: selecting D&B and some halftime bits from across the last two decades with a handful of 90s tunes spliced in. Bit of an epiphany really as most of this selection comes from an era that I have long overlooked in favour of the 92-97 sound. Yes, you may question the 'jungle' of the title but once you coin a name and a template you're stuck with it - besides that, it's all jungle to me mate :)

Aquatic Jungle (Part Three)

The tribute to DJ Spinbad continues with perhaps his most famous work. It's reportedly the most bootlegged mix of all time, so thought I might as well hop on board :D 

Spinbad's 1995 mixtape Rock The Casbah is frequently cited as THE defining moment in modern megamix/mash up culture, and with good reason. Featuring JS-One and A.Vee, according to the man himself this tribute to 80s pop was assembled on a 3-track (... a 4-track with a broken channel), and is simply put a technically brilliant, phenomenally imaginative and daring piece of mixtape history. To quote DJ Yoda's recent tribute, "Spinbad is one of the main reasons that I am a DJ. [He] was the first hip-hop mixtape DJ to leave the comfort zone of rap music. He showed me that music isn't something you need to be embarrassed about". 

To the mix then. I've only ever had a shortened version, but digging around there are a few variants commonly available, so this is a composite of the best quality remastered version I could find - blip-free, balanced and with the missing end stitched back in. I may revisit once I get a higher quality version of the post-Maneater section, but for now this will do just fine.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
