The summer is nearly here and tingz are heating up! Not weather-wise (come on, this is the UK!) but at the Run Tingz Bristol HQ.

Having blazed into 2013 with distinction – four massive releases, three new label signees, parties across the UK, an exclusive signing to the on-point Boom agency – the Cru now pull the biggest rewind of their lives and take us on a trip back to 2010/11 with their most comprehensive dispatch to date…

With over three years of unique contemporary Jungle locked up in the bullet proof Run Tingz vault, they thought it high time they revisited the first four releases and the tracks that started their epic journey. Giving the parts to a select team of all-star remixers, the result is a sun-soaked package of seismic soundclash proportions.

‘Jungle Champion’ leads. Run Tingz debut label release, they’ve given new signing J.Man the duties and he’s done them justice. Giving Blackout’s throaty patter centre stage on the well known ‘Real Rock” riddim, J strips the vibe back to a classic Jungle sub n’ skank approach giving it an instant timeless vibe.

Serial Killaz follow. Taking the Run Tingz anthem ‘Born Inna Babylon’ to a much deeper pasture with a softer swing and more emphasis on the iconic horn riff, once again they show why they’re the remixer of choice for many of the Jungle scene’s influential figures. Whaooooh!

Up next, Northern Lights’ take on the infamous ‘Informer’, a track so naughty they got Albert Square’s finest to front the video. With playful treatment of the Golden Hen, Steppa and Kitcha lull you into a false sense of security. Then BANG: when that bass drops, you’ll know all about it!

‘Sweet Sunshine’, meanwhile, has been expertly reworked another recent signing, Dossa. Complementing the sunny-side vibes of the original while adding his own party twist, the bass bubbles with a distinctive fuzzy, buzzy distorted funk that just won’t quit.

Tenerife-based Ricky Tuff closes the show with his remix of ‘I Got Love’. Warming the blend with deeper subs, skippier riddim work and punctual bass, it’s yet another fine complement to the stunning vibes of the original and introduces the last in the hat trick of signings in true style.

‘All Or Nothing’ is the long-awaited follow up to Calyx & TeeBee’s debut album ‘Anatomy’ set to be released on one of the bass music scene’s longest running and most highly respected labels, Ram Records. The duo’s first single from their new album has already been supported by Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Trevor Nelson and many more of the world’s leading tastemakers, and ‘All Or Nothing’ looks set to catapult this incredible production partnership to all new heights. 

Calyx & TeeBee’s debut album ‘Anatomy’, released in 2007 on their own label was an instant game changer; cited as a landmark album for the scene ‘Anatomy’ saw the duo unleash an almighty wall of sound that rocked dance floors across the globe as they took to the road with their 6 deck DJ sets, smashing apart sound systems in nightclubs and festival tents alike.  

Now, five years later, hordes of fans are aching for a new Calyx & TeeBee album and the duo are definitely not going to disappoint. Signing to Ram Records, Calyx & TeeBee have produced a long player that sounds fresh, current and forward-thinking. ‘All Or Nothing’ is their sophomore offering and is packed with new ideas, exciting collaborations, stunning musicality and an incredible level of technical skill. 

From the epic opening gambit, ‘Heroes & Villains’, it’s clear that Calyx & TeeBee have created something special with their new album. The D&B jazz fusion of ‘Pure Gold’ ft. Kemo contrasts beautifully with the vocal-led minimalism of ‘Strung Out’ and the hip hop excellence of ‘We Become One’, a collaboration with Foreign Beggars and DJ Craze. Then Calyx & TeeBee hit you with the rock-influenced ‘You’ll Never Take Me Alive’ featuring Beardyman, providing yet another inspired piece of deliciously different drum & bass. Each track on ‘All Or Nothing’ is crafted with expert precision and infused with a fresh and unique set of influences.

But while ‘All Or Nothing’ is packed with stand-out moments, it’s the album as a whole that becomes something far more exciting than the sum of its parts. Calyx & TeeBee stitch each moment together with over a decade’s worth of knowledge and an undeniable wisdom about how to create an exciting and unique sounding album. ‘All Or Nothing’ will draw you in and refuse to let go as moods and ideas flow freely, leaving you gasping for breath. This will undoubtedly be one of the albums of the year, if not the decade.


Calyx & TeeBee - Heroes & Villains

Mark XTC and Exile have been destroying speaker boxes for years and have certainly produced an anthem or two in the process. Stick that acid face back on and flash up your lighter as this wicked collection of tracks certainly combines the best of old and new. Rinse out!

‘Take Me Away’ comes fully correct with a combination of mid 90’s happy hardcore vocals and gritty, bass notes. Who would have thought the flip of ‘Six Days’ would be creating a storm all over again but in a totally different format? One thing is for sure - it works and does a fine job of crossing a relatively unexplored crossbreed.

The microphone champion GQ provided his calm and collected vocal ability on ‘Instinct’. An intimidating trip through vocal led breaks and nasty bass that instinctively causes front to back head movements. One for the corner shufflers.

Remember The X? How about the label Jump Up? Fear not as ‘New Dawn’ gets a well respected relick with 2019 drums, wonky pitch shifted bass and those silky smooth vocals you may well know and love. One to pull up a second time!

It’s 6am and the lights are on, what do you do? Drop ‘New Skool’ for starters and watch the sea of wide eye ravers spring back to life. This end track to the EP is nothing short of a secret weapon, causing speakers to self combust and the latest pair of Air Max to shred into thin air.

The Born On Road family grow stronger and stronger by the day and Selecta J-Man is integral to the development of their sound. BoR HQ is a busy hub of producers and DJs pushing to further the modern Drum & Bass Jungle sound and J-Man ties this all together with his team: Aries, Kelvin 373, Gold Dubs and Stivs.

When Drum & Bass met Reggae it spawned a whole new field of interest for the new school of producers who were addicted to taking foundation Reggae music and marrying it with rolling Drum & Bass. It’s un-pretentious approach to reinventing the ideals of Reggae into something that the UK ravers could hold as theirs has shown once again that Drum & Bass will never die and Selecta J-Man is one of these producers who is working with the Reggae greats.


Never one to boast, Selecta J-Man has engineered studio sessions with Protoje, Solo Banton, Deadly Hunta, London Posse, YT, Charlie P, Junior Dangerous, Eva Lazarus and Gardna amongst a wealth of others so his dubplate collection is unrivalled in the scene. It was this recording flare that has allowed him and his label Born On Road to take the Glastonbury Sound Clash crown in 2017 from the jaws of the renowned Shadow Demon Coalition.


It’s fair to say that Selecta J-Man has been welcomed into the scene with open arms by a wealth of established artists, perhaps most importantly good friend Aries who has kept a steady workload throughout his career and was instrumental in bringing J-Man’s sound up to par and introducing him around the world of Junglists.


Selecta J-Man’s releases have centred around Born On Road with the common championed theme of Reggae and Drum & Bass - Cease and Sekkle EP being his biggest release to date - but we don’t forget his first releases on Run Tingz Recordings and also his remix duties for Boom Sound and Chopstick Dubplate.


With his consistently bright attitude to making great tunes that punch hard and his commanding presence behind a set of decks, Selecta J-Man is a Drum & Bass Junglist who is here to stay.
