Alexander Lay-Far is a producer whose blends of deep house, disco, boogie, soul, jazz and broken beat have appeared on labels including Local Talk, Atjazz, City Fly, Lazy Days, Leng and the In-Beat-Ween Music imprint he established in 2015.

Track titled Something Else is a deliciously warm and woozy off-kilter broken beat track with ear-catching synthesizer flourishes and yearning melodies.

Selectors Assemble are hyped to premiere a track from Szajna's debut 4 track solo EP titled "M41" - soon to drop on the Phuture Shock label.

Already bubbling under the surface of Manchester’s diverse music scene for some time, Bill Szajna-Hopgood, better known as Szajna has been carving out a name for himself far beyond the city of late - as a producer and DJ with a certain penchant for the broken beat genre. In recent years his productions – largely in the form of unreleased dubs and re-edits - have been making waves on the underground; garnering support from DJ’s across the board, including bruk forefather IG Culture and various members of the Selectors Assemble crew. While last summer saw the Manc resident score a V/A appearance on EVM 128 and James Rudie’s Dance Regular imprint.

Track titled ‘Spooky’ connects the dots between broken beat, grime and dark garage, in turn revealing a much darker side of Szajna’s sound palette. Built around rugged, syncopated beats, and interjected with ice-cold synth motifs and dysphoric pads, the underside boasts a menacing b-line that channels the legacy of Drum’n’Bass and nods to the early works of UKG innovators like Groove Chronicles and Zed Bias.

Flumo and ANMA Records join forces once again - this time for a collaborative project between UK based Contours and Yadava. Cosmic Echoes was built over numerous jam sessions fusing live percussion, bass, drum machine, synthesizers and field recordings to create a raw EP full of soul and warmth.

‘Start First Finish Last’ opens up with smooth keys and alluring bass solo. The drum and percussion interplay keeps the up beat rhythm flowing, allowing for the bass to enhance on a Balearic and laid-back dance groove. ‘
‘Udu' takes the vibe on a more beat-driven road, with interlocking Kit and Udu patterns, floating keys and rolling synth arpeggios cutting in and out of the groove. ‘Speaking Through Broken Shells’, gets back on the bass and drum heavy interaction, with lots of influences from UK jazz scene.
 
The B-side starts off with a more familiar house groove. ‘Low Slung’, is a nod to the eyes down moments on the dance floor, with raw hats and shakers swirling around synth swells and heavy synth bass for introspective bliss.
‘Cascades’ swaps over to an atmospheric soundscapes, with plenty of stereo play and rich sound quality, making it easy to get lost in a jungle of flutes, keys and rain-line percussion notes.
 
NIAN’s remix of Cascades, takes the atmosphere up a beat and subs the rolling bass with broken beat rhythm, while Skygaze remix, of the same track, adds liquidity and reshapes the atmospheric sound into a more dance floor orienting mix.

In September 2005, then Washington Wizards NBA player Etan Thomas gave a speech at a rally in Washington DC that slammed the Bush administration and spoke out against the systemic racism and problems facing the Black community and racialized communities in the US. In the speech, Etan takes Republicans and conservatives on a “field trip” to show them the many issues faced by these communities: lack of educational resources, substandard health care, lack of economic opportunities, police brutality, the impact of unnecessary wars and voter disenfranchisement.  

Many of these problems are not only specific to America - they are faced by racialized and Black communities around the world. In 2010 Moonstarr revisited the speech and was inspired by Etan’s words to produce a track, but the song was never released.  

Fast forward to 2020. Etan’s speech is as relevant now as it was back in 2005. The current US administration and hateful rhetoric spewed from Donald Trump, and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement globally, has crystallized Etan’s message. Moonstarr and Public Transit Recordings felt now was the right time to put this song out to share Etan’s powerful message and spread it widely as possible as “The Trip”. 

All proceeds from the sale of “The Trip'' will benefit two organizations: The Etan Thomas Foundation (http://www.etanthomas.com) which helps youth achieve their potential and the Black Food Toronto (http://www.blackfoodtoronto.com) which champions food justice within Toronto’s African, Caribbean and Black communities.

Public Transit Recordings has already made a donation to support these great causes and will match sales of “The Trip” up to $500 to further support these organizations.
