The only way out for the people is to climb the stairs that lead to salvation, but the journey is not easy or safe. The song combines intense and dramatic sounds with powerful build-ups to convey the emotions and struggles of the people who are fighting for their survival and freedom. The cover photo of the song shows the stairs in the center of the picture, surrounded by buildings that are shattering and ripping apart. The people are running up the stairs, trying to escape the explosions and destruction that are happening above and below them. The song is a metaphor for the challenges and conflicts that we face in our lives and society, and the hope and courage that we need to overcome them. PROGRAM NOTE
The ideas in Snow Day were suggested by students in the Pelham Memorial High School Choir in Pelham, NY. The piece outlines a typical, hectic week in the life of teenagers. My lyricist David Cote and I spent time sifting through various comments from the choral members, and we eventually settled on a few key ideas that seemed to work well together and that helped to create a sort of encapsulated, dramatic narrative. Snow Day was commissioned by the Pelham Memorial High School Choir, Maria Abeshouse, Director.
